Rangers Hold Off Fort Lewis

Box Score

Denver, Colorado – The No. 16 Regis University Ranger women's lacrosse team returned home after facing three ranked opponents and turning in a 1-2 result over spring break in Florida last week.  Although, the game was played at Dick's Sporting Goods Park due to snow amounts on the RU home field, the Rangers were not affected defeating the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (1-1, 0-0 RMAC) 11-9.

Regis was led offensively by senior Emily Behr (St. Louis, Missouri) who netted six of the 11 goals on 14 shots, nine of which were on goal.  Behr scored the first three goals to give RU a 3-0 lead over the Skyhawks.  Ranger Melissa Hastie (Los Alamitos, California) would sneak one more in to make the score 4-0 at the 11:28 mark before Fort Lewis would finally tack one on the scoreboard a short minute later, 4-1.

RU would continue applying offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the first half putting two more in the back of the net to lead at halftime, 6-2.  A momentum shift occurred at the start of the second half as the Skyhawks scored four unanswered goals to tie the score, 6-6.  Finally, after eight minutes of play, Behr broke the RU silence to push the score back to a one-point lead, 7-6.

At the 11:37 mark, Fort Lewis would take their first lead of the game 8-7 but it was short lived.  The Rangers followed the loss of the lead up with four goals, two from Behr and one each from sophomore Emily Steiner (Chicago, Illinois) and junior Emily Elkins (Aliso Viejo, California) to make the score 11-8.

With time running down, the Skyhawks netted the final goal of the match with just under two minutes to play but falling short and moving Regis to an overall record of 3-2.

Senior goalkeeper Gianna Lombardi (Arvada, Colorado) played all 60 minutes to earn the win while making five saves on 14 shot attempts.  Freshman Hailey Nyquist (Snohomish, Washington) and sophomore Katie Coleman (Broomfield, Colorado) led Regis defensively each causing four turnovers.  Behr had a game-high of four draw controls.  RU won the shot battle 29-17.

The Rangers are set to host Shippensburg (0-1, 0-0) on Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m.
