Rangers Split with Adams St. on Saturday; Look to Even Up Series Sunday

Alamosa, Colorado- The sleeping giant that is the Regis Rangers (5-8, 1-4) offense was awoken in game two of the Saturday doubleheader with Adams State (5-7, 2-1). Regis snapped their seven game losing streak with a win in game two. Adams State won the first game 7-3, while the Rangers rebounded and won game two, 17-4.

In game one, Adams State got going early in game one and never looked back. The Grizzlies scored four runs in the second inning thanks to a two run homerun by junior outfielder Chris Morley. Jerid Huggins hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave the Grizzlies a 5-0 lead.

The Rangers were no hit by Adams State starter J.D Heredia until Logan Knox broke up the no hit bid with two outs in the top of the fourth. Junior outfielder CJ McGrady hit his first career homerun in the 5th inning by sending a two run shot over the scoreboard in left field. Regis was able to scratch a run across again in the 6th thanks to a RBI single by freshman second baseman Mickey Meinhofer. That would be all Regis could get going off of Heredia as he earned the win for Adams going 5 1/3 innings pitched scattering five hits. Sophomore Brad Thoutt took the loss for Regis giving up nine hits, seven runs and striking out five.  Junior Kirby Schwein threw two outs of scoreless relief for the Rangers.

Knox collected two hits to led Regis offensively. Ty Overboe, Meinhofer, Andrew Bryniarski, Mike Potter and McGrady each added a hit in the loss.

The offense production that the Rangers showed early in the season showed up again in the second game of the double dip. Regis got rolling right away as they scored three runs in the 1st inning. Overboe, Bryniarski and junior catcher Marco Burciaga all collected RBI hits in the inning. The Rangers explosion came in the 3rd inning. They were able to put up eight runs on eight hits in the inning. Burciaga smoked a three run homer, the first of his Ranger career, in the inning. Meinhofer had an RBI triple in the inning and Bryniarski had a clutch two RBI single in the inning as well.

The Rangers scored three runs in the 5th thanks again to a Burciaga RBI single. Junior outfielder Brian Sture also had a two RBI single in the inning. Junior third baseman Ryan Benedict connected on a three run homerun in the 6th inning.

Meanwhile, during the Rangers offensive surge, freshman southpaw Matt Heibult was brilliant in his start. Heibult earned the win for Regis going five innings and striking out five. Freshman Chris Quackenbush and Kirby Schwein each threw an inning of relief for Regis. Dylan Sherry took the loss for Adams State.

Regis collected 18 hits in the game. Burciaga led the Rangers with a career day as he went 4-5 with five RBI's.  Andrew Bryniasrki went 3-4 with three RBI's. Ty Overboe added three hits. Sture and LaComb each had two hits. Meinhofer, Benedict, John Flint, and Wes Byers all added a hit each in the win.

Regis will look to even up the series with Adams State on Sunday at 12pm.
