Box Score 2 Denver, Colorado – Tough day offensively for the Regis University Ranger softball team dropping to the Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves 5-2 and the Adams State Grizzlies 2-1 in the first day of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series. The Rangers (23-13, 18-7 RMAC) had no problems getting on base but struggled to make something happen with runners in scoring positions.
In the first game, CSU-Pueblo (18-19, 14-11 RMAC) started off in control putting two on the scoreboard in each the first and second and one more in the top of the fourth to hold a 5-0 lead over Regis. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Alyssa Finger (Las Vegas, Nevada) scored freshman Delaney McGinn (Arvada, Colorado) after reaching on base by a walk.
Although, the Rangers were able to hold the ThunderWolves scoreless throughout the remainder of the game, RU could never gain much momentum. What looked to be a positive start to the top of the seventh came up short. Sophomore Carlie Sexton (Littleton, Colorado) started things off with a triple to then score off a sacrifice fly from senior Taylor Wilcox (El Centro, California). That was immediately followed up by another triple from senior Rachel Illias (Beaverton, Oregon) but the nothing more would come of it as RU fell 5-2.
Junior Nicole Hull (Westminster, Colorado) started the game and pitched just two innings before junior Nicole Aviles (Phoenix, Arizona) entered. The two combined to allow ten hits and five runs while tallying three strikeouts. Hull recorded the loss on the game.
In the second game, Regis brought one across the plate early in the bottom of the first off a Sexton single to center field; she scored John. A Adams State solo home run in the top of the third allowed the Grizzlies to tie the game, 1-1.
It was not until the top of the sixth that ASU tallied the go-ahead run, 2-1. In each bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, the Rangers would leave a runner on base. Hull pitched all seven innings on the mound for Regis and moves to an overall record of 9-8 after allowing six hits while recording five strikeouts.
RU combined for 16 hits on the day leaving a total of 15 runners on base. John and Sexton led the Rangers with three hits apiece; Sexton earned one RBI.
Regis will take on both the ThunderWolves and the Grizzlies in another RMAC pod set to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 12. RU will first take on Adams State to be followed by CSU-Pueblo at 3 p.m.
