Box Score 2 Denver, Colorado- Goliath took game one and David struck right back taking game two. Regis Baseball upset the No. 1 ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks today in game two of a double-header by a score of 7-5. The Rangers (14-21, 9-16) had been right on Colorado Mesa's (32-5, 24-3) heels all weekend with a close game yesterday and a battle in game one today, which the Mavericks won 11-6. Finally, behind a solid outing from freshman starter Matt Heibult, Regis was able to take down the giant that had been cruising through RMAC competition.
Game one began with the Mavericks scoring twice in the top of the first inning and again scored two in the top of the third. Through three innings, the Rangers had not been able to get much of an offensive game going and were down 4-0. Junior shortstop Drew LaComb had worked his way around third in the second, but a freshman leftfielder John Flint strikeout for out number three meant LaComb had a short walk back to the dugout.
Finally, in the bottom of the fourth inning junior centerfielder Weston Byers helped put the Rangers on the board when he singled right back up the middle scoring LaComb and freshman catcher Christian Bitar. One inning later, both juniors right fielder C.J. McGrady and DH Ty Overboe crossed home plate to tie the game at four through five innings.
Through six and two thirds innings, sophomore starter Brad Thoutt had been able to keep tame the Maverick offense, but found himself in a jam with the bases loaded. Thoutt couldn't get the third out and allowed a Maverick double clearing the bases. Freshman reliever Jake Griffith closed the inning before any more damage could be done, but Colorado Mesa held the lead again at 7-4.
Regis answered with a single run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Colorado Mesa lead down to just two. The Mavericks added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Regis couldn't sustain a last minute rally losing 11-6.
Game two started much like game one with Colorado Mesa scoring three runs in the top half of the first. This time, however, Regis brought things back to even with three runs of their own. With McGrady at second and LaComb on first, senior third baseman Logan Knox singled up the middle scoring McGrady and pushing LaComb to third. Freshman right fielder Connor Rochon drove in LaComb and later scored from a junior first baseman Dylan Navarro single.
Colorado Mesa quickly captured the lead once again with single runs in the second and third innings. Through four and a half innings the score remained in favor of the Mavericks, 5-3. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, David struck.
LaComb again found himself on base with a single to right field. Two outs came and went and LaComb knew he had to make something happen. LaComb stole second which set him in up to score when Rochon singled to first and Bligh Madris created an error with his throw to third. Junior catcher Marco Burciaga reached first with his at bat and allowed Rochon to advance to third. Next, Navarro streaked a double to left center field scoring both Rochon and Burciaga. For the first time in the series, the Rangers found themselves leading the best team in the country 6-5. Not a chance was this one going to get away from the Rangers.
Regis scored one more to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Through six innings, Matt Heibult kept the Mavericks offense relatively quite and now he just needed three more outs to shut them down for a complete game. Heibult got outs one and two forcing the Mavericks into a double play which the defense completed. Just one batter later, it was over. Heibult got Kyle Serrano to fly out to left field and the Rangers won 7-5.
In Heibult's complete game he allowed just six hits and struck out five to earn his fifth win of the season. LaComb had a masterful day at the plate with total numbers of 5-7 hitting, scoring five runs, and one RBI. McGrady and Rochon each scored two runs on the day.
Regis heads into Sunday down 1-2 in the series, but can hopefully carry their game three momentum into game four to try and split the series. First pitch is set for noon at Regis Baseball Field.
