Box Score 2 Denver, Colorado – The Regis University Ranger softball team appeared to be back in action recovering to take down the Adams State Grizzlies and the Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWovles in the final day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series. Eight RBI's on the day gave RU a 5-1 and a 7-2 advantage over Adams State and CSU-Pueblo. The Rangers move to an overall record of 25-13 and 20-7 in the RMAC.
Pitching for Regis started and finished strong. Junior Nicole Aviles (Phoenix, Arizona) earned both wins throwing 12 total innings. Aviles allowed no runs and just one hit in the 7-2 defeat of CSU-Pueblo while tallying six strikeouts on the day. She moves to an overall record of 16-5 with an ERA of 2.89, second lowest in the RMAC.
Junior Nicole Hull (Westminster, Colorado) entered into the game for the final two innings against the ThunderWolves (19-21, 15-13 RMAC). Both pitchers combined to allow just 11 hits and three total runs, two of which were earned.
In the first game, the Rangers put up a four-spot in the first half inning of play as freshman Emily John (Beaverton, Oregon) and sophomore Bradey King (Loveland, Colorado) opened with two back-to-back singles. John would score on a fielding error followed by senior Taylor Wilcox (El Centro, California) singling to left field to score King and tally an RBI. Senior Rachel Illias (Beaverton, Oregon) would earn two RBI's by doubling to center giving RU a 4-0 lead.
Regis brought on more across in the bottom of the sixth to lead, 5-0. The Grizzlies (18-18, 16-14 RMAC) recorded their only run of the game in the top of the seventh off a double.
In the second game, wild pitching on the opponent's side allowed for John to take advantage early in the bottom of the first to put the Rangers ahead 1-0. It was not until the top of the fourth when the ThunderWolves would record their first hit but just before that in the bottom of the third, Regis brought more across the plate to create some separation in the lead.
On three hits and one CSU-Pueblo error, RU tallied three more to control the lead 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth. The ThunderWovles scored one each in the sixth and seventh but it would not be enough to bolster any momentum as Regis held the visitors to just two runs.
Hull and Sexton led Regis offensively; Hull two hits and two RBI's and Sexton with three hits. Combined with strong pitching, the RU defense left ten runners stranded on base throughout both games.
The Rangers have home field advantage hosting cross-town rival and RMAC leader Metro State on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19. Game times on Saturday are at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
