Rangers Rally Late, But Drop Final Series Game 14-9

Box Score

Denver, Colorado- All weekend the Regis Baseball team battled tough against the No. 1 Colorado Mesa and today was no exception. Down 14-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Rangers started an offensive rally that for a time looked like wasn't going to stop. Regis put up four runs, cutting the Colorado Mesa lead to just five, but finally the Mavericks earned their third out. Colorado Mesa won 14-9 and the series 3-1.

The first inning came and went with a blink of the eye, but then the Mavericks exploded offensively for seven runs in the top of the second. The Rangers got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman first baseman Andrew Bryniarski put run number one on the board when freshman center fielder John Flint singled up the middle. Next, freshman catcher Christian Bitar earned run number two off of a junior shortstop Drew LaComb single.

In the top of the fourth, the Mavericks extended their lead to 9-2. Regis punched right back scoring three in the next inning. LaComb, freshman shortstop Mickey Meinhofer and junior left fielder C.J. McGrady all scored bringing the Maverick lead back down to just four runs.

The Mavericks scored a total of five more runs in the sixth and ninth innings. Down 14-5, it looked like the Rangers were down, out, and ready to call it a day. But no, the Rangers were not going to go down that way.

Meinhofer got the ball rolling reaching first thanks to an error by the Maverick shortstop. After working his way over to third, Meinhofer scored off of a senior third baseman Logan Knox fly out to right field. Senior DH Ty Overboe reached home when junior pinch hitter Marco Burciaga singled to short center field. Bruciaga eventually came around to home plate when sophomore pinch hitter Mike Potter also singled to the middle. Potter would unfortunately be the last runner to cross home for Regis.

Meinhofer was the leading run earner for the Rangers with two on 1-5 hitting. Seven other Rangers would score on the day. Junior starter Kirby Schwein was handed his second loss of the season.

The Rangers will be traveling over to MSU Denver on Tuesday for a single game starting at 6 pm. Then, another home series is set for the upcoming weekend against No. 8 CSU-Pueblo.
