Rangers Takedown Skyhawks; Will Host RMAC Tourney

Box Score

Durango, Colorado- Regis Lacrosse's loss to Grand Valley State earlier in the week was a forgettable one and that is exactly what the team needed to do in preparation for today's match against Fort Lewis. There were many reasons to do so, but none more important than the fact that today's game would decide who hosts the RMAC tournament. The Rangers did focus in on today's match up and left Durango with an 11-10 victory.

The Rangers fifth conference win got started with an unassisted goal from freshman midfielder Jada Bonner. Bonner scored just five minutes into the game, but the Skyhawks would answer shortly tying the game up at 1-1 through the first ten minutes.

The Skyhawks' Taylor Cabrera gave her side the 2-1 advantage off of a free position shot at the 18:59 mark. The Fort Lewis lead did not sit well with senior attacker Emily Behr so she took a sophomore midfielder Erin Steiner assist and tossed it to the back of the net evening the game at two a piece. Bonner would earn another unassisted goal to regain the lead with 14:58 to go in the half.

Again, the game saw a lead change with two goals from Fort Lewis putting them up by one once again. Then, you guessed it, Regis took back the lead and would hold it for the remainder of the half. Steiner, senior attacker Lily Colley, sophomore midfielder Anna Takushi, and junior midfielder Abbey Chimenti would each score and at the half Regis held a one-point advantage, 7-6.

It was Fort Lewis who scored first in the second half leveling out the scoreboard at sevens. Then the Rangers netted two more goals to jump ahead 9-7. Senior midfielder Melissa Hastie scored her first of the game at 22:31 and Takushi put away her second with 12:54 to go in the game.

After the two teams traded goals and with Regis still up two, Fort Lewis rallied late in the game to even things up at 10-10. With 3:58 to go the Skyhawks' Nikki Fry tied the game, but before another minute passed Bonner would score the eventual game-winning goal with 3:05 to go.

The ensuing draw control was picked up by Fort Lewis, but that was about as much pressure they could muster against the Regis defense before the clock struck zero.

Bonner had the team high three goals off of three shots; she also contributed one assist and two caused turnovers. Takushi scored twice from her two shots. Six other Rangers scored on the day; in total they converted 11 goals from 22 shots.

The Rangers last remaining regular season game is set for next Saturday, April 25th. Regis will face-off against CSU-Pueblo with first draw set for 1 p.m.
