Rangers Fall Short in RMAC Clash with Metro State After First Day of Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denver, Colorado –With weather delaying the much anticipated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series between Regis University and Metropolitan State University of Denver, MSU Denver (32-10, 23-5 RMAC) was able to produce big plays at key points in both games as the Rangers fell 7-3 and 5-3 after the first day of play.

It was a defensive battle after four innings in the first game, both teams exchanging three ups and three downs and searching for a break.  A Roadrunner solo homerun in the top of the fifth put the first run on the board.  The Rangers responded in the bottom half with RBI's from sophomore Alyssa Finger (Las Vegas, Nevada) and junior Nicole Aviles (Phoenix, Arizona).  Freshman Breanna Pearsall (Fremont, California) also came across scoring on a fielding error to give Regis a 3-1 lead.

On back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth, MSU Denver evened the score, 3-3.  With the winning run on third in the bottom of the seventh, RU could not convert sending it to extra innings.  The RMAC battle would continue through the next couple innings until the Roadrunners opened up the scoring in the top of the tenth.  On five hits, MSU Denver would score four to hold a 7-3 lead.

Unfortunately, the Rangers could not muster up any momentum falling in the first game of the series after ten innings.  Aviles threw all ten innings, faced 42 batters, and posted seven strikeouts to move to an overall record of 16-6.

The second game would start much differently than the first.  The Roadrunners tallied one to the board in the top of the first with the Rangers matching it in the bottom of the second off an RBI bunt by senior Brianna Bogdajeiwcz (Streamwood, Illinois).

Three top of the sixth runs by MSU Denver and one more in the top of the seventh put the Roadrunners at a 5-1 advantage.  Regis fought with a late-game push in the bottom of the seventh kicked off by a single from sophomore Bradey King (Loveland, Colorado).  King was able to advance to second on a fielding error.

Senior Taylor Wilcox (El Centro, California) advanced King to third while junior Nicole Hull (Westminster, Colorado) recorded the RBI singling to left field.  Wilcox then scored from a single by freshman Delaney McGinn (Arvada, Colorado) but the comeback fell short and stopped there moving the Rangers to an overall record of 25-15 and 20-9 in the RMAC.

Hull recorded the loss on the mound pitching all seven innings to move to an overall record of 9-9.  The Rangers tallied 17 hits throughout both games and five RBI's.

The final games of the series will be played Monday, April 20 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
