Rangers Come Up Short in Two Games Against Adams St.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denver, Colorado- Coming into the four-game series today against Adams St., the Regis Baseball team knew they had to simply win one game at a time to keep their chances of post-season play alive. Those chances were unfortunately squandered after just game one with the Grizzlies edging out the Rangers 8-7 in extra innings. Regis held the lead half way through game two, but eventually lost that lead and the game to Adams St. 9-6.

In game one, Regis was the first to reach home with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. With junior center fielder Weston Byers at third and freshman shortstop on at second, junior second baseman Drew LaComb knocked a Grizzly pitch to center field clearing the bases and reaching first.

In the top of the sixth, Adams St. took the lead with three runs, but the Rangers quickly took back the advantage in the bottom half. Freshman catcher Christian Bitar smacked a home run to left field brining in two runs with freshman right fielder Connor Rochon already on base. Through six innings the Rangers were up 4-3.

The top of the seventh saw Adams St. put up three runs on the board; the runs gave the Grizzlies a 6-4 advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, it looked as though Adams St. was going to grab game one right then and there, but the Rangers rallied for a two run inning knotting the score at 6-6 and pushed the game into extras.

In the tenth inning, Adams St. went ahead with a single run home run, but junior catcher Marco Burciaga made things even once again scoring from third on a throwing error made by the Grizzlies. The Rangers had a chance to end the game with Byers on third base, but two outs came and went and the game was headed for an 11th.

Adams St. took the one run advantage and then took care of business on the defensive end executing a double play to end the game at 8-7.

Game two of the double header was first sparked by a four-run half by the Grizzlies in the 2nd inning; that was nearly match by the Rangers in the bottom half. Freshman first baseman Andrew Bryniarski first reached first on a single before Rochon doubled down the right field line. Burciaga's double drove in both Bryniarski and Rochon; shortly after Burciaga would cross home from a freshman shortstop Mickey Meinhofer ground out to cut into the Grizzly lead 4-3.

In the bottom of the third, the Rangers scored two more with freshman third baseman Ryan Benedict and Bryniarski reaching home. Through three innings, the Ranger held a 5-4 advantage that would last through the 4th as well.

Adams St. would take control once again with two runs in the top of the 5th and the two teams traded runs in the sixth for a score of 7-6 headed to the last inning. The Grizzlies added two insurance runs and the Rangers were sat down 1, 2, 3 to end the game at 9-6.

Freshman reliever Chris Quakenbush and freshman starter Noah Gotsis were handed losses on the day. Quakenbush has registered a record of 1-4 on the year and Gotsis is 0-4. Burciaga had arguably his best two games at the plate hitting 3-4, scoring four times, and contributed two RBIs. Rochon hit 3-7, scoring twice, and 1 RBI. Freshman shortstop Mickey Meinhofer and Bryniarski each score two runs.

Tomorrow the four-game series between the Rangers and Grizzlies is set to wrap up with another double-header at 12 & 3 pm at Regis Baseball Field.
