Rangers and Cougars Split Double Header Again; Split Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lakewood, Colorado- Once again Regis Baseball met up with Colorado Christian today for a double-header. Once again the two teams split. The Rangers had a chance to win the four-game series after winning game one by a score of 5-2, but the Cougars picked up game two 10-9 with a walk-off single in the ninth.

Game one scoring began in the third inning with each team crossing home plate in each of their halves. Junior left fielder C.J. McGrady scored from third when freshman shortstop Mickey Meinhofer hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Cougars answered with a run from Jerry Gallegos.

After a scoreless fourth, the Rangers put up runs in the next three innings. In the top of the fifth McGrady would score his second run of the game. Freshman first baseman Andrew Bryniarski notched another run for the visiting side to put Regis up 3-1. In the top of the seventh inning, the Rangers increased their offensive production scoring two runs from McGrady and freshman center fielder John Flint. CCU's one run in the bottom of the inning made it 5-2 through seven.

Regis would not go on to score any insurance runs for the rest of the game, but was able to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard as well. Freshman closer Chris Quakenbush earned his first save of the year closing out the last one and two third innings.

CCU took the early lead in game two scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. However, that lead did not last long when the Rangers brought three across home plate the very next inning. Junior center fielder Weston Byers' single allowed his fellow junior and third baseman Ryan Benedict to round third and cross home plate. With Byers on, McGrady homered his second of the year to take the lead 3-2.

In the top of the third inning, Regis scored another three runs extending their lead to 6-2. CCU cut into that lead in the bottom of the fifth, but with just one run. In the top of the sixth inning, the Rangers increased their lead to 8-3.
In the seventh and what should have been the last inning, CCU clawed their way back and tied up the game with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the eighth inning, junior pinch hitter Dylan Navarro gave the Rangers the lead once again, but the Cougars were still able to tie the game up in the bottom half.

In the top of the ninth inning, Flint maneuvered his way over to third and in scoring position. That would unfortunately be as far as he could reach as senior second baseman Logan Knox flied out to end their half. CCU needed just one run in the bottom of the ninth and it came from Dakota Bayles.

Sophomore starter Brad Thoutt earned his third win of the season working seven and one third innings and striking out seven CCU batters. Junior Casey Kennedy was handed the loss in the second game. McGrady hit 3-6 total scoring five runs and driving in four RBIs. Eight other Rangers scored on the day.

Regis will face a huge match-up this weekend taking on the #1 team in Division II. Colorado Mesa will be visiting Regis Baseball Field all weekend for a four-game series. Friday, April 10th, game time is set for 3 p.m. A double-header is set for 12 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 11th. The series will be wrapped up on Sunday, April 12th with a 12 p.m. first pitch.
