Box Score Denver, Colorado- For back-to-back years the Regis Women's Lacrosse team will be competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament championship game. With today's victory over Fort Lewis, 14-11, the Rangers will be seeking their second straight conference tournament crown.
While it was the Rangers who came out of the game victorious, the Skyhawks were able to control the game early on. After Regis senior Lily Colley put the first point up on the board. The Skyhawks rattled off two goals to take the lead a little less than five minutes into the game. Senior Melissa Hastie tied up the game a minute later with an assist from Colley, but Fort Lewis would control the majority of the first half.
Down 9-6 with a minute to go in the first half, the Rangers went on a scoring streak. Senior Emily Behr scored back-to-back unassisted goals just 11 seconds apart. Then Hastie evened up the scoreboard with a goal at the 27-second mark off of an assist from senior Maribel Gallegos.
To start off the second half, Behr put the Rangers up by one once again, 10-9, scoring from a free position shot. The Skyhawks tied the game a little over one minute later, but the Rangers were determined to take control of the game. Behr and Hastie scored unassisted goals to give the Rangers their largest lead of the game.
Fort Lewis would score just once more before the Rangers would score three more times to close out the game. Junior Emily Elkins scored with 6:59 to go in the game to put her home side back to two up. Sophomore Anna Takushi would score at the 3:13 mark and sophomore Erin Steiner put one more in the back of the net with three seconds remaining on the clock just for good measure.
Behr and Hastie led the Rangers' offensive attack each scoring four times. Steiner and Elkins scored twice. Colley, Takushi, and freshman Jada Bonner each had one goal. Freshman Kenley Harrington made seven saves on her way to her sixth win of they year.
Tomorrow the Rangers will face the No. 1 seeded Lindenwood Lions for the conference championship. It will be a rematch of one of the most thrilling games in RMAC competition this year; back in March, the Lions edged out Regis by just one goal. The match between Regis and Lindenwood is set for a 2 p.m. start at the Regis Lacrosse Field.
