Box Score San Antonio, Texas – Another low scoring, defensive battle, and pitching duel in the seventh meeting between the Regis University Rangers and the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners. After the Rangers took the 1-0 result to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament last weekend, this time the result ended in favor of the Roadrunners 2-1 after a single to left field in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run.
Junior Nicole Aviles (Phoenix, Arizona) continues to be a force to reckon with on the mound for Regis. Aviles tallied three strikeouts throwing 61 strikes out of 109 to move to an overall record of 20-9.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when freshman Emily John (Beaverton, Oregon) gave the Roadrunners some trouble after striking a hard hit ball with the bases loaded to score the runner on third.
After an extensive weather delay that lasted just shy of two hours called in the top of the fourth, the game picked up right where it left off, conference rivals battling for advancement. The Roadrunners made a pitching change shortly after the restart of the game. The tying run was scored in the bottom of the fifth in a play at the plate that RU could not convert.
The seventh, and final inning, appeared as if the Rangers would regain control of the lead. King reached on by fielder's choice and Sexton reached by a catcher's interference call. On two outs and runners on first and second, senior Taylor Wilcox (El Centro, California) singled down the first baseline but King was caught in between third and home for the Roadrunners to seal the final out of the inning.
With the game one out away from heading into extras in the bottom of the seventh, MSU Denver's Sarena Espinoza sent one just out of reach of sophomore Alyssa Finger (Las Vegas, Nevada) in left field to score the winning run on second.
Each team recorded four hits; the Rangers left nine total runners on base. Sophomore Bradey King (Loveland, Colorado), junior Nicole Hull (Westminster, Colorado), Wilcox, and John each tallied one hit with John earning the lone RBI.
Regis will play the loser of St. Mary's and Texas Woman's tomorrow, Saturday May 9 at 2:30 p.m.
