Box Score DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University women's soccer team lost their first game of the 2015 season, falling 2-1 to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.
Regis started the game by attacking the Broncos defense with great pace, counter attacking each chance they got. Early in the first half on an attack by redshirt-junior Sade Akindele, the Broncos defense had no other choice but to foul her in the box to prevent the scoring opportunity.
The Rangers were awarded a penalty kick on the Akindele foul. Senior Sid Otto stepped in and netted the ball in the right corner of the goal with the keeper jumping the opposite way. Eight minutes later Cal Poly Pomona attacked the middle of the Ranger defense leading to the equalizer by forward Stacey Atwater. At half time the teams remained deadlocked at one.
In the second half, the RU defense fought to gain possession which ultimately led to a CPP corner kick in the 66th minute. The corner kick found the head of Bronco defender Megan Kisslan who sent the ball into the upper left corner of the goal.
The Ranger offense continued to push for the equalizer, but failed to capitalize on any opportunities. RU was outshot by the Broncos 16-13, while the Rangers put more shots on goal 6-4. Regis also had the advantage in corner kicks 9-6. The team falls to 3-1 on the season and will look to get back on track when they travel to UC-Colorado Springs Friday September 18.
The women's soccer team will return home September 25 to face fellow RMAC foe Colorado Mines at 4:30 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.
