Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a dominating three set shutout over the Adams State Grizzlies. The Rangers move to an overall record of 4-5 and 1-0 in the RMAC.
RU jumped out to a convincing 10-3 lead early in the first set and never looked back. Maintaining a consistent lead throughout, the closest the Grizzlies (1-8, 0-1 RMAC) would come was within three at 19-16 mark but a Katie Klein kill extended the lead and carried the Rangers into a first set win.
Regis picked up the second set right where the first left off with an early 12-4 lead. Adams State slowly began etching away at the RU lead to come within three, 24-21, but a Grizzly attack error gave the Rangers a 2-0 set lead.
Adams State was able to gain more offensive momentum in the third set in an attempt to extend the night but proved unsuccessful. The score would tie twice at eights and then at nines but back-to-back kills by Maggie Steward and Rebecca Sponcil gave Regis the lead again.
RU's Caitlyn Martinez subbed in late in the third set and put down three immediate kills to bring the score to match point. The kill leader of the night, Klein, finished the Grizzlies off tallying her 16th of the match.
This match marks Klein's eighth double-digit kill performance this season and even more impressive was her .625 attack percentage. Klein went 16-24 on the night with just one error. Also producing for the offense was Steward and Rachel McCue with ten kills apiece.
An impressive defensive effort, Regis never allowed Adams State to lead at any point throughout the three sets. McCue and Sponcil led the Rangers with 12 digs, respectively. Brinley Beresford went in the books for 31 assists and added three service aces; overall, RU tallied 11 service aces.
Regis is back on their home court Saturday, September 19 at 5 p.m. hosting the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (3-6, 0-1 RMAC).
