Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team finished out the opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 home victory over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (3-7, 0-2 RMAC). With this win, the Rangers move to an overall record of 5-5 and a clean 2-0 in the RMAC.
The first two sets ended in a similar dominating fashion as their 3-0 win over Adams State last night. The Rangers started out hot taking the first set 25-16 and the second 25-12 but the Skyhawks were not to be counted out just yet.
In the third set, Fort Lewis jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but RU followed it up with five unanswered points to flip the script and control a 5-3 lead. The Skyhawks began fighting back and eventually battled their way back into an 11-10 lead. As the offensive momentum shifted to FLC, the Rangers soon saw a competitive third set end in favor of Fort Lewis due to an increase in Regis unforced errors.
Entering into the fourth set, Regis regrouped presenting Fort Lewis with another battle. RU sprung to an early 7-2 lead to maintain it throughout the remainder of the set never allowing the Skyhawks to swing the momentum. Right side hitter Katie Klein dominated on the attack yet again producing a season-high 20 kills. Klein also rounded out an impressive weekend with a .381 attack percentage.
Brinley Beresford assisted on 37 kills while also helping with 13 digs and four kills on just five attempts for a .800 attack percentage. Beresford was not the only defensive production; four other players saw double-digit digs as well, Rebecca Sponcil with 17, Rachael McCue and Kristina Schell with 13, and Alessandra Orlandini with 11.
Overall, the Rangers recorded a .244 attack percentage while holding the Skyhawks to just .058. Kills ended in favor of RU 59-31 with 19 more chances.
