Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Ranger women's basketball team pushed their win streak to four-straight defeating the visiting Colorado Mesa Mavericks 67-60. Prior to this big win by the Rangers, they were sitting in a three-way tie with Mesa (10-6, 7-5 RMAC) and UC-Colorado Springs (12-6, 8-4 RMAC). With the RU win and a win from UCCS, Regis and UC-Colorado Springs are now tied at 8-4 in the conference.
Knowing this game carried a lot of weight, the Rangers hit the ground running jumping out to an early 8-4 lead. The back-and-forth battle that would pursue the remainder of the game began as each team traded three-point baskets exchanging control of the lead four times in three minutes. Between the two squads, an impressive nine three-pointers were made in the first quarter as CMU held a slight 22-20 lead.
RU held the Mavericks scoreless for four minutes in the second quarter to outscore the visitors 17-11 and control a 37-33 lead at halftime as Karlyn Johnson grabbed and finished a layup as time expired. The Rangers repeated on another defensive shutdown in the third holding CMU without a basket for another four minute stretch pushing their lead, 46-35, at the 3:57 mark.
The Mavericks attempted to recover from an eight point third quarter drastically increasing their offensive production but Regis was able to hold off the push. A CMU layup with just under a minute to play brought the lead to 63-60 but Johnson finished one at the rim with twenty seconds remaining extending the score back to two possessions, 65-60. Johnson then secured a missed Mesa three-point attempt and knocked down two free throws to secure the victory for RU.
Regis, once again, outrebounded their opponent 41-31 while shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from distance. Johnson led the Rangers scoring a season-high 15 points going 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down eight rebounds, three of which were offensive.
Jessica Ramos and Caresse Williams both dropped 12 with Ramos shooting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and Williams going 5-of-9 from the field. Bay'lee Purdy put up ten of her own to round out the Rangers in double-digits for the night. Kaylie Rader came out big adding nine rebounds and nine points.
RU hosts Westminster (6-10, 3-9 RMAC) Saturday, January 23 at 5 p.m.
