Hansen, Sienko lift Regis men's basketball over Adams State

Box Score

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (8-13, 6-9 RMAC) played the second game of their two-game road trip Saturday night against Adams State University (9-11, 8-7 RMAC) and picked up their eight victory of the year, 74-62.

Regis got to work early jumping out to a 4-0 lead following baskets from freshmen Ryan Beisty and Luke McGuire to open the game. ASU quickly tied the game at seven apiece but sophomore Dexter Sienko responded with a layup, earning a shot from the free throw line after the Grizzlies fouled him on the shot.

Midway through the first half, the Rangers held a 15-11 lead after a jumper from freshman Jarrett Brodbeck hit nothing but net. Junior Noah King made his first shot in three attempts, a three-pointer giving RU an 18-13 lead with seven minutes to go in the half. Over the course of five minutes, the ASU fought their way back and took their first lead of the game 28-27 with two minutes remaining in the half.

Senior Billy Hansen responded with a three-pointer, putting Regis back on top 30-28. Senior Dylan King followed up with a three-pointer of his own extending the lead 33-28. The score remained the same as the teams headed into the locker rooms for halftime. D. King led the way for the Rangers with 11 points in 12 minutes of play. Twelve offensive rebounds for RU led to 12 second chance points.

The second half opened up with a quick foul on the Grizzlies, sending Sienko to the line who nailed both free throws. King and Hansen both continued their hot shooting from deep, hitting back to back three's to give Regis a 43-37 lead after five minutes of play in the second half. At the ten-minute mark of the second half, ASU had cut the lead to one, and as he has done all night, Hansen had a response. The guard hit his fourth shot from three-point land to give the Rangers some breathing room.

Once again, the Grizzlies were within two points, and Hansen connected on yet another trifecta, his fifth of the game, extending the lead to five with eight minutes left. Two free throws from McGuire at the 3:30 mark gave the Rangers a 15-point lead, 69-54. As the time ticked down, ASU was forced to foul looking for a comeback. It was too little, too late for the Grizzlies as RU was able to hold onto the 74-62 victory.

Head coach Brady Bergeson praised the team's ball security and the ability of the team to control the flow of the game as he added, "we did a great job as a team, keeping the tempo where we wanted it, slowing down and being smart on the offensive end". Hansen led the way with 20 points (6-12 3-pt), while Sienko had a monster night on the glass collecting a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with 15 points (11-12 FT). D. King added 16 points (6-10 FG, 2-4 3-pt), Beisty had eight points, and N. King tallied seven points to go along with a team-high four assists. Regis forced 15 turnovers and committed only nine, finishing with 16 points off turnovers and 20 second chance points.

The men's basketball team will return home for their next four games as they host Colorado Mines (14-6, 9-5 RMAC) on Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m. The next night, the Rangers will welcome Colorado Christian University (11-10, 7-8 RMAC) to the fieldhouse for a matchup with the Cougars on Saturday, February 6 at 7 p.m.
