Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Regis University women's basketball headed out on a four-game road stint following two impressive conference wins last weekend. Having previously matched up against the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets less than a month ago, the Rangers could not continue the streak falling 67-60 to one of the top teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
A back-and-forth opening quarter of play proved this RMAC battle was going to be fought until the end. The Yellow Jackets (10-2, 7-1 RMAC) held a 19-14 lead after the first quarter. Black Hills State surged at the start of the second quickly placing Regis down 15, 31-16, halfway through the second.
Never to be counted out, RU went to work. The Rangers closed the second quarter out with a 12-4 run, 37-30, to put themselves in a position to make some noise in the second half.
Another 10-2 run to open the third quarter swung control of the lead in favor of Regis. The Rangers not only exploded offensively throughout the remainder of the third but held BHSU to just four points outscoring the hosts 19-4 to give themselves a 49-41 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
The Yellow Jackets began to find the bottom of the net at the start of the fourth slowly working their way back into the game. A scoreless four-minute drought by Regis allowed Black Hills State to even the score and eventually take back control of the game. BHSU produced a 9-2 run pushing the lead to 59-53 with just under three minutes to play. Caresse Williams drained one from beyond the arc to stop the run but the Yellow Jackets were able to quickly regain momentum responding with six straight points. Unable to fully recover from such a fast Black Hills State scoring surge, RU was outscored 26-11 in the fourth quarter.
Regis outrebounded BHSU 37-31 attacking the offensive glass and pulled down 17 boards. Fairly even stat columns in the box score saw RU shoot 41.5 percent to Black Hills 44.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent to 44.4 percent from distance. However, points scored while the clocked was stopped did not favor the Rangers tonight as they went just 10-of-21 from the charity stripe.
Kaylie Rader led the team with 15 points going 7-of-10 from the field and added seven rebounds. Williams and
Bay'lee Purdy chipped in with 11 points a piece combining for 4-of-8 from three.
Karlyn Johnson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Next, the Rangers travel to South Dakota Mines (5-6, 2-5 RMAC) Saturday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
