Offensive production plagues Rangers in first loss

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – Closing out the opening weekend of conference play, the Regis University women's basketball team suffered their first loss this season to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (6-5, 2-0 RMAC) 71-56. The Rangers move to an overall mark of 6-1 and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Chante Church gave the Rangers a 7-4 lead at the five-minute mark in the first quarter. Regis then experienced a scoring drought for the next four minutes ending the first quarter down 17-10.

The Orediggers continued to halt the Rangers offense in the opening minutes of the second quarter. An 8-0 Colorado Mines run gave the home team their largest lead of the game thus far at 25-15.

The Rangers applied full court pressure in an attempt to cause turnovers and wreak havoc on the Colorado Mines rhythm. The full court pressure proved successful as RU was able to convert ten points forcing five straight CSM turnovers decreasing the deficit to 25-20 to close out the second quarter.

Despite closing the gap before halftime and holding the Orediggers to just eight second quarter points, the Rangers offensive struggles continued. Unable to truly gain any consistent momentum, Regis trailed 52-37 at the end of the third quarter.

RU held CSM scoreless for a three-minute span at the beginning of the fourth quarter but could not make any real progress on the lead. Colorado Mines continued to extend their lead and ultimately take the win over the Rangers.

Regis forced 20 Oredigger turnovers, 15 of which came in the first half but could not slow down the offensive production of CSM. RU shot just 27 percent from the field and 21 percent from beyond the arc. For the first time this season Regis was outrebounded 45-34.

Church dropped a Regis career-high with 17 points on 5-of-8 from the field, 2-of-4 from three and 5-of-6 from the line. Majestie Robinson added 13 points, two assists and two steals while Karlyn Johnson finished the night one rebound shy of a double-double. Johnson netted 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Regis returns to the Fieldhouse next weekend hosting MSU Denver on Friday, December 9 and UC-Colorado Springs Saturday, December 10. Both games will tip-off at 5 p.m.
