Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Regis University women's lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0 RMAC) opened their season on Saturday morning with a trip to Colorado Mesa University to face the Mavericks (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) in a non-conference matchup. Although they found themselves down early, Regis rallied back to take the 15-13 victory.
CMU got the scoring started less than two minutes into the game, but the Rangers responded with a goal of their own, from freshman Sarah Myres, a minute later. Between the five and ten-minute mark, the Mavericks scored five goals and did not allow RU to score any, bumping their lead up to 6-1.
Regis closed out the first half on a 5-1 run of their own with goals from senior Hilary Duda, freshman Wendy Donier, junior Anna Takushi, and senior Melissa Hastie (2) to bring the Rangers within a single goal of CMU at 7-8.
The second half started off with a bang for RU as they scored the first three goals of the half to take a 10-8 lead. Duda, sophomore Jada Bonner, and junior Erin Steiner all contributed to Regis taking their first lead of the game.
Six minutes into the second half, the Mavericks were able to tie the game at 11, but Regis responded with four unanswered goals to take a 15-11 lead with five minutes left in the game. CMU squeaked out one more goal, but the Rangers were able to keep their three goal lead to end the game.
Hastie led all Rangers with four goals on four shots, also tracking down a game-high five ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Kenley Harrington faced 19 shots, saving seven, in 60 minutes of play and earning her first win of the season. As a team, RU was 13-18 in clear attempts for the game. Regis outshot the Mavericks 34-24, while also committing nearly half as many turnovers as the home team.
The women's lacrosse team will return to action next Sunday, February 28 against Pfeiffer University (0-1, 0-0 CC) as they travel to Misenheimer, North Carolina for a non-conference game with the Falcons at noon.
