Rangers take final game of series from the Lopers 9-6

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. -  The Regis University baseball team (4-2, 0-0 RMAC) finished out their home-opening series against the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers (1-6, 0-0 MIAA) on Sunday afternoon with a 9-6 win over the visitors.

Regis came out swinging on Sunday, piling on two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and four more in the second. In the bottom of the second inning, junior Josh Newell (5-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI's) doubled to right center scoring redshirt-freshman Logan Heflebower (1-3, R), and junior Max Fabricant (1-3, 3R) on the play.

The Rangers added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning as Newell sent a single into center field scoring Fabricant for the second time in the game. Newell continued his hot streak as he crushed a homerun over the right field fence, once again scoring Fabricant, and giving RU a 9-2 lead.

When it looked like Regis had the game wrapped-up and closed out, UNK made a comeback attempt in the eighth and ninth inning. A homerun from the Lopers cut the lead to five after the eighth inning, and a two-out single in the ninth inning cut the lead to three. Senior Jake Long came on and closed out the game, getting the final out of the ninth inning.

Sophomore Noah Gotsis earned his first win of the young season as he pitched a gem. Gotsis went seven innings, scattering four hits, and allowing only two earned runs. The sophomore also struck seven Loper batters out while only walking one. Eight Rangers had hits on Sunday including five from Newell.

Senior Drew LaComb went 2-4 from the plate, scoring two times. Senior Brian Sture collected two RBI's on the day, ranking second on the team behind Newell (5). Sophomore Connor Rochon had two hits in three at-bats, driving in one run in the bottom of the first.

Next weekend, the Regis University baseball team welcomes the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith to Denver, Colo. for a five game series. The first game of the series is set for Friday, February 26 at 1 p.m. followed by a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday, February 27, and Sunday, February 28 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days.
