Softball struggles in opening games of Desert Stinger Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Regis University Ranger softball team struggled through opening play of the Desert Stinger Classic. The Rangers fell in both games, 8-3 to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Vulcans and 5-3 to the Central Washington Wildcats.

In the first game against Hawi'i Hilo, Regis matched the number of runs the Vulcans scored in the second to tie the score, 3-3, but could not keep up after that. Hawai'i Hilo brought three more across in the next half inning to take the lead, 6-3.
The Rangers would record four more hits throughout the remainder of the game but leave four runners stranded to ultimately fall to the Vulcans. Hawi'i Hilo narrowly outhit RU 9-8. Nicole Aviles threw all seven innings for Regis tallying four strikeouts and suffering the loss, moving her overall record to 1-2.
In the second game, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard early in the first half inning, 1-0, leaving the Rangers to, again, fight from behind. Central Washington continued to hold control of the lead bringing two more runs across in the third and one in the seventh, 5-0.
A late spark from Regis in the bottom of the seventh began to close the gap on the Wildcats, 5-3, but they came up just short leaving a runner on base as CWU was able to close out the game. RU tallied six hits and left six runners on base. Rachel Jones pitched in all seven innings for Regis while facing 31 batters. Rachel Illias went 4-for-5 on the day to offensively lead the Rangers. Macy Cox chipped in going 3-for-6 coming across the plate twice and recording an RBI.
Regis returns to action for the second day of play in the Desert Stinger Classic tomorrow, Saturday, February 6 against California Baptist at 2 p.m. and Concordia (Cal.) at 7 p.m.
