Box Score DENVER, Colo.- The Regis women's basketball team took down #21 Colorado Mines, they moved into a tie for second place in the RMAC, extended their win streak to eight, and senior Bay'lee Purdy jumped into the top 10 for all-time scoring in Regis history. That is a night full of excitement. Oh, and the game was a nail biting four-point victory that was a fight till the very end.
Coming into the night, the Rangers knew the game was going to be a tough battle from start to finish against an Oredigger team that has been predominately at the top of the conference the past few years. Senior Caresse Williams put the first points on the board for the Rangers tying the game at two a piece. Another two minutes into the first quarter, the game was stilled tied up, 7-7.
From there the Rangers were able to build some momentum as Purdy and fellow senior Jessica Ramos knocked down back-to-back three pointers to open the lead to 16-9. By the end of the first quarter, the Rangers jumped out to an 11 point lead, 23-12.
To start the second quarter, Colorado Mines attempted to crawl their way back into the game, but Regis wasn't going to let it happen easily. The Orediggers brought the Ranger lead down to just seven points, but three scores in a row for Regis pushed the lead back up, 30-18. By half time, Colorado Mines gained some momentum of their own, but still trailed 39-33
The third quarter started with back-to-back buckets from the Orediggers, but Purdy responded with a couple of her own and the Rangers maintained a seven-point lead. At the end of three quarters, the Rangers still were in control of the game up by eight.
Then things started to get interesting.
Slowly, but surely Colorado Mines started to find their way back into the game and with just less than three minutes to go in the game, the Rangers lead was cut to four. One point went to the Orediggers, and then two for the Rangers. Four points in a row for Mines and with three seconds to go, the Rangers were looking at only a one-point advantage.
Then the play that probably decided the game, Williams took a charge from a streaking Oredigger up the bench side, at mid-court. Williams only made one of two free throws, but a turnover by Mines gave Regis the ball. Mines had to foul to stay in the game; Purdy hit two free throws to seal the game and to surpass Coach Marrin on the all-time scoring list.
Regis will be shooting for their ninth straight win tomorrow against the Colorado Christian Cougars. CCU is the team the Rangers are tied with for second place in the conference. Safe to say, things at Regis Fieldhouse will get even more interesting tomorrow night with tip-off at 5 pm.
