No. 21 Regis softball splits second day of Desert Stinger Classic

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 21 Regis University Ranger softball team closed the second day of the Desert Stinger Classic with a split taking down the RV California Baptist Lancers 4-0 but falling 8-1 to the Concordia Irvine Eagles.

In the first game, Nicole Aviles led the charge on the mound for Regis against Cal Baptist pitching all seven innings. Aviles allowed no runs on just five hits while striking out nine batters. Impressively backing up Aviles proving just as sound was the Ranger defense. RU made big plays at crucial moments in the game, including but not limited to: Bradey King cleaning up a ricocheted grounder with runners in scoring position to get out of an inning, Ashley Prescott making quick work of every ball hit her direction in right field, and Carlie Sexton catching line out after line out.

Regis got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Delaney McGinn dumped one over the left field fence to score Alyssa Finger, who reached base singling through the left side. McGinn, again, came across in the top of the fifth after a single put her on base and back-to-back stolen bases placed her in scoring position.

Then, McGinn, who went 3-for-3 in the game, scored on a passed ball after singling to right field in the top of the seventh to seal the shutout. RU held the Lancers to their lowest run total thus far this season and forced them to multiple three and out innings.

In the second game, the Rangers never seemed to gain any sort of offensive momentum. The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. The lone run of the game for Regis came on two outs in the bottom of the fourth off a solo homerun over the left field fence by Aviles.

RU struggled to contain the offensive powerhouse that was Concordia Irvine being outhit 14-4. McGinn led the Rangers again going 2-for-3 putting her daily performance at 5-for-6 from in the box. Of the four RBIs on the day, McGinn claimed two for herself.

The Rangers have one game remaining against the Western Washington (2-2) Sunday, February 7 at 12:30 p.m.
