Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – Coming off a rough opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, the Regis University baseball team (6-10, 0-5 RMAC) was back at it this Friday, opening up a four-game series against Adams State University (8-10, 4-1 RMAC) with a 7-4 loss to the Grizzlies.
ASU got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning after a lead-off single, followed by a triple two batters later, gave the home team a 1-0 lead. The Rangers would not respond until the top of the sixth inning when senior Ty Overboe walked, later scoring on an error by the ASU third baseman.
The Grizzlies got the lead right back in the home half of the sixth inning as the lead-off man reached with a double, coming around to score a couple batters later. After six full innings, ASU held a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, junior Josh Newell singled to left field on a 3-2 pitch. Two batters later, Overboe laced a double into left field allowing Newell to come around and score. The next batter, sophomore Connor Rochon traded places with Overboe as he crushed a double into the left field gap, giving RU their first lead of the game 3-2.
The momentum took a turn in the bottom of the seventh as two singles and a double allowed the home team to get the lead back 4-3. In the visiting half of the eighth inning, sophomore Zach Dedin came pinch-hit for Regis, singling up the middle, scoring senior Dylan Navarro from second base.
A solo shot from the Grizzlies, followed by a bases loaded walk, and a single in the bottom of the eighth, gave ASU a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning. The Rangers could not get the runs back, losing the game by a final score of 7-4 in nine innings.
In his fifth start of the year, sophomore Brad Thoutt threw 6.1 strong innings, giving up only two earned runs and striking out a season-high eight batters. Thoutt has not allowed more than four earned runs this season, and has given up two earned runs or less in three of his five starts. Three batters for RU had two hits in the game including Newell (2-5, R), Overboe (2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI), and Rochon (2-5, 2B, RBI).
The baseball team will play a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 12 with the Grizzlies.
