Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. – After dropping the first game of the four-game series on Friday afternoon, the Regis University baseball team (6-12, 0-7 RMAC) was looking to get back on track Saturday with a doubleheader against Adams State University (10-10, 6-1 RMAC). Regis was unable to take a game from the Grizzlies, falling 11-6 in game one, and 15-4 in game two.
In game one, the Rangers were the first to get on the board as senior Ty Overboe sent a solo shot over the left center field fence, giving RU a 1-0 lead after the first inning. ASU would get the run back in the bottom of the second inning, knotting the game at one run apiece.
The bottom of the third inning is when things began unraveling for Regis. The Grizzlies put up nine runs in the home half of the third inning to take a 10-1 lead early in the game.
The Rangers struck back with three runs in the top of the fourth coming on a single up the middle from junior Josh Newell, scoring junior Max Fabricant. Redshirt-freshman Logan Heflebower scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, bringing the score to 10-4.
Regis pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but it was not enough to overcome the lead that ASU built in the bottom of the third. The Rangers lost the game 11-6, with sophomore Chris Quackenbush (2-2) picking up his second loss of the season. Quackenbush pitched two innings, gave up five hits and four earned runs, while walking four batters.
Newell finished a perfect 3-3 from the plate with one RBI, and one run scored. Overboe (2-4, HR, 2 RBI's, R), Fabricant (2-3, RBI), sophomore Connor Rochon (2-4, .500 BA), sophomore Andrew Bryniarski (2-3, 2B) all had two hits in the game.
The second game of the doubleheader saw much of the same with RU drawing first blood I the top of the first as a single from Rochon scored sophomore Mickey Meinhofer. The Grizzlies, once again, used a ten run second inning to build an early lead and put Regis in a big hole early on.
A ground-rule double from Bryniarski in the top of the third scored Overboe and cut the lead to 10-2 after the visitor's half of the third. The home team came to bat in the bottom of the third and extended the lead to 15-2 by the end of three innings.
The Rangers scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as Fabricant and Heflebower both came around to score. After four innings of paly, ASU had a 15-4 lead and the score would remain the same for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore Noah Gotsis (1-3) took the loss after giving up nine earned runs on seven hits. RU had five batters that recorded a hit in the game, but the Grizzlies outhit Regis 15-5 and came away with the victory. Rochon, Bryniarski, and seniors Ryan Bendict, Weston Byers, and CJ McGrady all had one RBI, respectively.
