Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. - In the series finale of the four-game set with Adams State University (11-10, 7-1 RMAC), the Regis University baseball team (6-13, 0-8 RMAC) started hot, but another disastrous inning haunted them late, giving the Grizzlies a 17-10 victory.
The home team took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Regis was able to get one of those runs back in the top of the third inning. With runners on first and third, the ASU pitcher balked allowing redshirt-freshman Logan Heflebower to score, giving the Rangers their first run of the day.
After the Grizzlies pushed across another run in the bottom of the third inning, RU put up a five-run fourth inning. A single from senior Weston Byers scored sophomore Andrew Bryniarski to get things started. Heflebower came through with a single of his own, scoring senior Ryan Benedict, and junior Max Fabricant on the play. With a 4-3 lead, sophomore Connor Rochon came to the dish and singled to center field, scoring both Byers and Heflebower extending the Regis lead to 6-3.
Heading into the top of the fifth, the Rangers added a couple more runs as Byers picked up another RBI on a single to center field. Senior Ty Overboe then singled, scoring Heflebower and Byers on the play, to give RU a 9-3 lead.
For the third time in four games, Regis had one inning in the game that allowed ASU to capitalize and take a commanding lead. In the series finale, this happened in the bottom of the fifth as the Grizzlies scored nine runs to take back the lead at 12-9.
The Rangers managed to score only one more run in the game, while the home team put one across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, and four more in the bottom of the seventh. ASU took the final game of the series 17-10.
Senior Kirby Schwein picked up his second loss of the year as he went four innings on the mound. Seven batters for RU had two or more hits in the game with senior Dylan Navarro (3-6, 2B) leading the way with three. Overboe, Byers, Rochon, and Heflebower each had two RBI's on the day, while Fabricant added an RBI of his own.
The baseball team will return home to host New Mexico Highlands (5-16, 2-6 RMAC) for a four-game conference set. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
