Strong defense lifts Regis to 2-0 lead in series with CCU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team earned two wins after the first day of doubleheader action hosting the Colorado Christian Cougars. The Rangers fought from behind in the first game to top the Cougars 3-2 and then followed up with a 9-5 win.

One thing remained consistent throughout the day and that was defense as Regis committed no errors through 17 CCU hits. Nicole Aviles and Nicole Hull each threw complete games with Aviles notching six strikeouts and Hull with five.

Game 1: Regis 3 Colorado Christian 2

Colorado Christian brought one across in each the first and second to lead 2-0 but the Rangers would not allow any more Cougar runs as the visitors would leave eight runners stranded. Aviles earned the sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to get RU on the board by scoring Bradey King who reached on a walk.

The Rangers would trail by a run, 2-1, until the bottom of the fifth when Alyssa Finger, on two outs, singled up the middle scoring King again. As the score sat tied 2-2, Regis would score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded when King singled to left field scoring the pinch runner Breanna Pearsall.

The Cougars had two hits in the top of the seventh but RU was able to close out the inning as Aviles sat down the last two runners lifting Regis to the game one win.

Game 2: Regis 9 Colorado Christian 5

The Rangers wasted no time jumping out to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning due in large to a Finger home run over the left field fence that would score three. Hull and Delaney McGinn also drove in runs pushing the RU lead to five.

It was not until the top of the fifth when CCU made things interesting. The Cougars scored four runs on four hits to come within one of RU, 5-4, after four and a half innings. Regis quickly put two more on the board responding in the bottom half of the fifth with help from two hits and two Colorado Christian errors.

An impressive triple to right field from Macy Cox scored Ashley Prescott and Cox was brought across when Michelle Larose singled to short to push the Regis lead to 9-4 and out of reach of the Cougars. CCU snuck one across in the top of the seventh but it would not be enough to gain any momentum as right fielder Pearsall made a sliding catch and threw out the runner at second that failed to tag on the play to end the game.

Finger and Cox each went 2-of-6 on the day as Finger recorded five RBIs and Cox had one. Cox also reached on a walk twice. Hull chipped in going 2-of-3 at the plate and tallying one RBI.

Regis and Colorado Christian are back in action Monday, March 21 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to close out the series.
