Rangers stunned by Thunderwolves 8-7 in extra innings

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. -  The Regis University baseball team (6-6, 0-1 RMAC) lost a tough game in extra innings on Friday afternoon as the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves (7-5, 1-0 RMAC) scored the winning run in the top of the tenth inning, taking the 8-7 victory.

Regis got on the board first when senior Ty Overboe (2-4, RBI) laced a single into left field scoring sophomore Mickey Meinhofer (2-4, 1 R, 1 BB) for the 1-0 lead. CSU-Pueblo came back with a three-run top of the second inning to give the Thunderwolves a 3-1 lead.

In the home half of the second inning, the Rangers got one run back on a single from senior Ryan Benedict (2-5, RBI, 2R) that scored senior Brian Sture (1-4, R) cutting the lead to 3-2. A couple batters later, junior Josh Newell (3-5, HR, 4 RBI's) sent a ball over the right field fence, scoring two runs and giving RU the 4-3 lead after two full innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Regis once again put up three runs as Newell roped a shot into center field scoring Benedict and sophomore Zach Dedin (1-5, R) on the play. A few batters later, the CSU-Pueblo pitcher threw a wild pitch that allowed Newell to score from third base, extending the Rangers lead to 7-3 after the fourth inning.

The Thunderwolves had an answer in the top of the fifth as they brought four people around to score, tying the game at seven runs apiece. Neither team was able to scratch across a run for the next four innings, sending the game into extra innings.

In the visitor's half of the tenth, CSU-Pueblo scored a run on a single to right field. After the third out of the inning, it was RU's last opportunity to win the game. With a runner on second base and only one out, Regis was unable to bring the tying run across the plate, losing the game 8-7 to the Thunderwolves.

Seven Rangers collected hits in the game but it was not enough to take down CSU-Pueblo in extra innings. Sophomore Brad Thoutt threw five innings, surrendering only four earned runs, and striking out three batters. Junior Adam Montano came on in relief of Thoutt and threw five impressive innings, giving up only one earned run, scattering four hits, and striking out two batters.

The baseball team will return to the field tomorrow morning to face the visiting Thunderwolves in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. with the second game set for 2 p.m. The final game of the series is set for Sunday at noon.
