Rangers squander both games to Thunderwolves on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo. -  After losing a tough game in extra innings the day before, the Regis University baseball team (6-8, 0-3 RMAC) lost both games in the Saturday doubleheader against the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves (9-5, 3-0 RMAC) by a score of 10-4 in the first game, and 5-3 in the second game.

In the first game the Thunderwolves jumped out to an early five-run lead after only two innings of play. Regis finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as junior Max Fabricant came around to score on a throwing error by the CSU-P shortstop.

The Thunderwolves extended their lead to 9-1 after the fourth and fifth innings but the Rangers chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. A three-run bomb from sophomore Connor Rochon (1-2, HR, 3 RBI's) scored senior Ty Overboe (1-3, R), and sophomore Mickey Meinhofer (2-4, R) to bring RU within five runs of the visitors.

CSU-P pushed their final run across in the top of the seventh inning and Regis was unable to dig themselves out of the hole, dropping game one of the doubleheader 10-4 to the Thunderwolves. Five Rangers pitchers combined to throw seven innings, striking out five batters.

Game two was a much closer contest as both teams grinded out the seven-inning battle. After CSU-P scored a run in the top half of the first, the Rangers matched it with a run of their own as junior Josh Newell (2-3 2 R) crossed the plate in the inning.

The Thunderwolves got another run in the third inning, and two in the fifth before RU would score again. In the bottom half of the sixth inning, a SAC fly from Overboe scored redshirt-freshman Logan Heflebower from third base. Rochon (1-3, RBI) laced a single through the right side on the next at bat, scoring Newell on the play and bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of CSU-P.

In the top half of the seventh, the visitors brought another run across the plate, giving them a 5-3 lead with one more chance for Regis to pull off the victory. The Rangers could not find the bats in the bottom of the seventh, going down 1-2-3, giving the Thunderwolves their second victory of the day.

Sophomore Noah Gotsis (1-2) threw a great game, tossing 6.1 innings, surrendering only six hits, and two earned runs in the effort. Sophomore Mickey Meinhofer added two hits in the second game, giving him four hits on the day (4-7, .571 BA). Overboe and Rochon had the only RBI's in the game in a game where four RU batters collected hits.

The baseball team will return to the field tomorrow afternoon to face the visiting Thunderwolves in the final game of the series at noon.
