Slow offensive day dooms RU at Colorado Mesa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University Ranger softball team stumbled in the first day of doubleheader action on the road at the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (10-7, 9-1 RMAC). The heavy hitting offense of the conference-leading Mavericks proved too much as the Rangers fell 5-2 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

Colorado Mesa put up three in the bottom half of the second to take an early 3-0 lead. The offensive struggles for RU remained consistent throughout the game until Nicole Hull knocked a solo homerun over the center field fence in the top of the fifth. Then, Ashley Prescott came up big on two outs with a double through the right side giving the Rangers an opportunity to cut the 3-1 CMU lead. Prescott advanced to third on a wild pitch but was ultimately left stranded as the Mavericks were able to get out of the inning.

Colorado Mesa extended their lead, 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, too far out of reach as one from Regis in the top of the seventh would not be enough for a comeback. RU had one less hit than CMU at 7-6 but it was the host team that was able to capitalize on scoring chances.

The struggles at the plate continued into the second game for the Rangers as they could only muster just one hit to the Mavericks eight. Colorado Mesa put an eight spot up early in the game, two in the first and six in the second. RU would leave two runners on base as the second game came to a close after the fifth inning.

Hull led Regis on the day going 2-of-3 in the first game including her solo homer. The Rangers begin doubleheader action at 11 a.m. to close out the series against Colorado Mesa Sunday, March 6.
