Rangers fall short to Roadrunners in game one

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – For the first time in nine days, the Regis University baseball team (10-15, 4-9 RMAC) was back in action as they met with cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver (10-13, 6-7 RMAC) for the first game of a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) showdown. Regis got things started early, but in the end the Roadrunners took the game by a score of 4-2.

The Rangers got the scoring started in the top of the first as senior Ty Overboe doubled scoring junior Josh Newell from second base. The home team got the run back, tying the game at one in the bottom of the second inning.

MSU-D scored one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead into the top of the eighth inning. With one out in the top of the eight, Overboe crushed a pitch and sent it over the fence for RU's second run of the game. Regis would not push any other runs across the plate in the inning, bringing the score to 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

After shutting things down in the bottom of the eighth, the Rangers had three outs to play with in the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners got three quick outs and the game ended with MSU-D taking the game 4-2.

Overboe led the team with three hits in four at-bats while Newell and senior Ryan Benedict added two hits apiece. Overboe had both RBI's and Newell scored one of the two runs for RU. Sophomore Brad Thoutt (3-2) went six innings, giving up four earned runs, and scattering six hits. Regis left seven runners on base, and that proved costly as runs come at a premium on the road.

The series will continue tomorrow with game one of the doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. and the second game starting at 4 p.m.
