Regis suffers 14-6 loss to CCU, win series 3-1

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – After taking the first three games of the series, the Regis University baseball team (14-17, 8-12 RMAC) was one out away from taking the four-game sweep from the Colorado Christian Cougars (9-28, 4-20 RMAC) before the visitor's spoiled things for Regis, taking the game 14-6 in ten innings.

For the first time all series, CCU put up the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning. The Rangers had a big response as they put up four runs in their half of the first inning.

Senior Dylan Navarro (1-4, 3B, 3 RBI's) did the bulk of the damage with a three-RBI triple to deep right-center field that brought home sophomore Mickey Meinhofer, and seniors Drew LaComb and Weston Byers.

The Cougars would get a run in the top of the third, but RU countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly to deep center field from Byers, gave Regis a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Another run for the Rangers in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from redshirt-freshman Logan Heflebower extended the lead to 6-2 after six innings of play. CCU began mounting their comeback in the top of the seventh as they scratched across a run to cut the RU lead to only three runs.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Cougars scored two more runs to put the pressure on Regis with only one inning left to play in regulation. With a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the ninth, the Rangers sent out senior Casey Kennedy who had dominated CCU in two appearances the previous two days.

The visitors would finally get to Kennedy with two outs in the ninth as they scored the tying run right before Kennedy was able to get the third out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, RU threatened to bring a run home, but the Cougars foiled their attempt as the game moved into extra innings.

With CCU coming to bat, Regis looked to get three quick outs to give them a shot at winning the game in the bottom of the tenth. What happened could not have been further from the Rangers' plans as the Cougars scored eight runs to take a 14-6 lead in the top of the tenth inning. The inning proved to be the demise of RU as they went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth giving the visitor's the 14-6 win in ten innings.

Senior CJ McGrady had the best day at the plate for the home team as he collected three hits in five at-bats, including one double and an RBI. Sophomore Connor Rochon had two hits in his five trips to the plate on the day. Senior Kirby Schwein pitched six innings, giving up only four hits and two earned runs despite walking four batters.

The baseball team will take to the road next weekend as they travel to Colorado Mesa University to face the top team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (31-5, 21-2 RMAC) beginning on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m.
