Box Score DENVER, Colo. – For the fourth straight game, the Regis University baseball team (15-21, 9-15 RMAC) and the No. 4 ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (34-7, 24-4 RMAC) engaged in a pitcher's duel that ultimately saw the home team prevail late in the game 6-0.
After giving up one run in the bottom of first, senior Kirby Schwein (1-4) settled down and was able to tame the Mavericks offense for a majority of the game. Schwein only allowed three hits in 7.1 innings of work, but two errors by the Regis defense allowed CMU to score two unearned runs against the senior. The pitcher struck out nine batters, walked four, and only surrendered two earned runs.
Despite the effort on the mound, the Rangers had a difficult time finding the sticks on offense. Three batters for RU collected 2+ hits on the day including senior Brian Sture who had three hits in four trips to the plate. Senior Weston Byers and sophomore Connor Rochon each went 2-4 on the day, with sophomore Christian Bitar (1-3) earning the only other Regis hit for the game.
The home team limited the Rangers baserunners as they did not concede a single walk in the game. The Mavericks scored five runs, four unearned, in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game away at 6-0. Pitching from both teams was superb throughout the entire four-game series with CMU edging out RU on three occasions.
The baseball team will remain on the road next weekend as they travel to Colorado State University-Pueblo (22-11, 16-6 RMAC) to take on the Thunderwolves in the second series of the season between the two teams. The Rangers will seek revenge for the four-game sweep they suffered at the hands of CSU-P earlier this year.
