Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University baseball team (11-16, 5-10 RMAC) faced cross-town rival Metropolitan State University (11-14, 7-8 RMAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Regis split on the day, taking game one 1-0, and dropping the second game 4-0.
In game one, pitchers for both squads each threw remarkable games. Sophomore Chris Quackenbush earned the victory as he hurled a gem. Quackenbush surrendered only five hits in seven strong innings, and did not give up a single earned run. The sophomore struck out seven Roadrunners, while only walking two.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Rangers came to bat with only three outs to get one run. Senior Weston Byers led off with a single to the shortstop. Senior Brian Sture then connected on a pinch-hit single to right field, sending Byers to third base. A dribbling hit to the right side of the infield resulted in junior Josh Newell reaching first base, and Byers scoring to give RU the 1-0 lead.
Quackenbush shut things down in the bottom of the seventh to give Regis the thrilling 1-0 victory. Newell led all Rangers going 2-4, with the game winning RBI. Sture's pinch-hit single was huge as it allowed the winning run to reach third base before Newell came to bat.
Game two consisted of another low-scoring contest as MSU-Denver left with the 4-0 win. RU had a difficult time trying to figure out the pitching from the home team. Newell, Rochon, and Byers each had one hit in the game.
Sophomore Noah Gotsis put together six strong innings of pitching, scattering five hits, and giving up four earned runs. The sophomore struck out seven MSU-Denver batters but he was outdone by his counterpart on the mound.
Rochon had a double, and Newell managed to steal a base when he reached on his base-hit. Unfortunately, Regis was unable to capitalize, eventually falling 4-0 to the Roadrunners.
The baseball team will be back on the field tomorrow at noon for the series finale. The Rangers will attempt to earn a split in the series as they currently trail 1-2 in the series.
