Rangers sweep Saturday doubleheader with Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo. -  Less than 24 hours after their thrilling 12 inning victory, the Regis University baseball team (14-17, 8-11 RMAC) clinched the series victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars (8-28, 3-20 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon. Regis swept the doubleheader as they allowed only one run on the day.

Game 1- Regis 7, CCU 1

As they did in game one of the series, the Rangers got the first runs of the game as they scratched across two runs in the home half of the first inning. A single from senior Ty Overboe (1-3, 2 RBI') drove in junior Josh Newell (2-3, 2R, 2B) for the game's first run. Senior Drew LaComb would later come around to score to give RU an early 2-0 lead.

Regis would continue to put up the runs as they added four runs to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. The inning was capped off by a single from sophomore Connor Rochon (1-3, RBI) that brought Newell around to score his second run of the game, putting the Rangers ahead 6-0 over CCU.

Both teams would score one run apiece in the fifth inning, but it was the pitching from the home team that dominated the game. Sophomore Chris Quackenbush (5-2, 3.73 ERA) threw six strong innings, giving up only one earned run on five hits. The sophomore also struck out five batters on the day.

Game 2- Regis 5, CCU 0

The second game of the doubleheader produced the same great pitching from RU as sophomore Noah Gotsis (3-4, 5.82 ERA) dazzled the Cougars all day long. The pitcher did not allow a single run in six innings of work, striking out six batters without issuing a single walk.

Offensively, Regis continued to hit the ball well as six batters collected hits in the game. A double from LaComb (1-3, 2 RBI's) in the bottom of the first, giving the Rangers a first inning run for the third straight game.

Later in the inning, Rochon (1-3, RBI) sent a single through the right side that allowed LaComb to come around and score the second run of the game for RU. In the bottom of the fourth, Regis pushed one run across, and then extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Casey Kennedy (2-0, 7.53 ERA) came on in relief and shut things down just as he did the previous day. This time Kennedy threw one inning without giving up a hit, striking out one batter, closing the game out for the Rangers third straight win.

The teams will return to the field tomorrow for the series finale as the Rangers look to take the series sweep from CCU, with the game set to begin at noon.
