RU shocked by CCU 2-1 in overtime

Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (0-4-1, 0-1 RMAC) ventured to Colorado Christian University (4-2, 1-0 RMAC) on Friday afternoon to tangle with the Cougars in each team's first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match of the season.

Regis was shocked by CCU as they ended up taking the 2-1 victory on a header goal less than two minutes into the overtime period.

Freshman Tori Rinsem got the Rangers on the board with the first goal of the game in the 18th minute as she took a shot from the top of the box, sending it whirling past the goalkeeper into the left side of the net.

Rinsem's first goal of the season gave RU their first lead of the game at 1-0 as junior Lizzie Thometz picked up her first assist of the season on the play.

With a lull in the action, both sides prevented any real scoring opportunities for the remainder of the first half, therefore the score stayed 1-0 at the end of 45 minutes, and each team headed into halftime.

The Cougars came out looking to find the equalizer, and that is exactly what they did in the 66th minute. Kielli Jordan scored the game-tying goal 21 minutes into the second half and gave the game a new meaning for each team.

Neither squad could muster up any offensive attacks that led to goals in the remaining 24 minutes of regulation and the game carried into overtime deadlocked at one goal apiece.

Overtime did not last but more than two minutes before CCU's Mariah Fredericks put the game away with a header in the 92nd minute. The home team outshot the Rangers 8-6, but each team managed to put three of their shots on goal.

The women's soccer team will now have two days to prepare for a very difficult matchup on the road against No. 5 Colorado Mines (4-0-0, 0-0 RMAC) on Sunday, September 18 at noon. The Orediggers face off with Metro State University-Denver tonight at 7 p.m.
