Rangers push No. 5 Orediggers to the brink, fall 1-0 in 2OT

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (0-5-1, 0-2 RMAC) went head to head with the No. 5 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (6-0-0, 2-0 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon and battled tough for over 100 minutes, but CSM came through with a golden goal in the second period of overtime giving them the 1-0 victory at home.

In the opening half of the game, the Rangers let the home team know that this would not be a walkover type of game. Instead, it was RU who controlled much of the possession and created the majority of the offensive opportunities.

Regis held CSM to only one shot in the first half, taking three of their own, with each team putting one of their shots on goal. The Rangers took the only corner kick in the first half, and showed that they are still a team with a lot of potential.

The second half began and both teams were searching for the first lead of the game. This time it was the Orediggers who put the pressure on RU as they took eight shots in the second half, forcing senior Kat Crump to make three saves, holding the home team scoreless.

Unfortunately, Regis was unable to score any goals of their own despite taking three shots in the second half. With the score deadlocked at 0-0, the game carried into overtime as the teams regrouped and strategized for how to handle the extra periods of play.

Overtime lasted both periods with the first period of overtime seeing both teams get shots off, but nothing reaching the net. Period two saw the home team prevail off a corner kick that found the head of CSM's Emily Townsend who sent the No. 5 ranked Orediggers home with a 1-0 victory.

The teams battled for the entirety of the match with the home team finishing with 12 shots (6 shots on goal), compared to seven shots for the Rangers (one shot on goal). Crump made five saves in the match but she and the defense needed to make one more stop late in the game to give RU a chance to upset No. 5 ranked CSM.

The women's soccer team will return home to host Fort Lewis College on Friday, September 23 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a quarrel with Adams State University two days later on Sunday, September 25 at 1 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.
