Comeback attempt falls short for Regis as they drop 87-81 to CSU-Pueblo

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball (13-7, 7-7 RMAC) team fell six points short in their late comeback attempt against the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves (14-6, 12-3 RMAC).

Junior Dexter Sienko led all Regis scorers matching his career-high with 27 points. Sienko went 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line with six rebounds and three blocks.

Sophomore Jarrett Brodbeck added 18 going 5-of-10 from distance and 6-of-13 from the field. Senior Noah King chipped in with 11 points, seven boards and eight assists.

How It Happened: Brodbeck had the Rangers first five points as the home team opened to a 7-2 lead over the ThunderWolves. King immediately extended the lead to 10-6 knocking down one from distance.

CSU-Pueblo battled back but a quick 6-0 RU run, which included another Brodbeck three-pointer pushed the lead to 18-11. The ThunderWolves put together a 6-0 run of their own to close the gap again. For the remainder of the half both teams would go basket-for-basket each taking turns at holding the lead.
In the final five minutes of the first half, the score would tie three times. Brodbeck gave the lead back to the Rangers at halftime, 39-36, dropping his third three thus far.

The start of the second half picked right up where the first left off. It was clear that neither team was willing to back down in the slightest. Just before the second media timeout of the half, the ThunderWolves swung momentum in their favor with an 8-0 run to lead 52-47.

CSU-Pueblo controlled the largest lead of the game thus far at 62-51. The ThunderWolves could not be controlled from beyond the arc for a three-minute stretch midway through the second half.

The Rangers slowly began chipping away at the deficit putting together an 8-0 run of their own that brought them with four at the 2:25 mark, 79-74. Sienko was responsible for seven of the eight points in the run that brought Regis alive.

Big three-point baskets from Brodbeck and King with under a minute to go brought the Rangers back to within four, 85-81. RU ran out of time on the clock to overcome the deficit to split on the weekend moving to an overall mark of 13-7 and 7-7 in the RMAC.

Games Notes: The Rangers won the battle on the boards outrebounding the ThunderWolves 35-27. Regis scored 20 points off 14 CSU-Pueblo turnovers. RU shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field, 42.3 percent (6-14) from distance and 64.3 percent (18-28) from the line.

Next Up For The Rangers: The men's basketball team will return to the Regis Fieldhouse for two games next weekend as they welcome the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, and the Colorado Christian University Cougars to their home court on Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4, respectively. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be rematches of games from earlier this season.
