Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team returned to the court Saturday night, one day after extending their conference win streak to five straight.
Despite having three players foul out, Regis (12-3, 6-3 RMAC) found a way to hold off the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (2-7, 3-12 RMAC) on Saturday night, extending their win streak to six games for the second time this season.
How It Happened: Picking up right where they left off the previous night, Brodbeck and the Rangers came out shooting from deep as three of their first four baskets were from beyond the arc.
RU lost their lead midway through the half, 14-16, as the teams battled to corral the momentum and increase the scoring margin. A late 14-2 run from Regis capped off by junior
Kevin Metoyer's layup, with a foul, and the ensuing free throw, put the visitors ahead 40-28 with two minutes to go in the first half.
With a 55-40 lead in the second half, RU was cruising on both ends of the court. Offensively the team was getting, and knocking down, open shots while the defense caused posed major problems for the Mavericks.
CMU used a 20-6 run late in the game to cut the lead to 61-60 in favor of Regis. From that point on, the game was a nail biter. Three Rangers fouled out, and the pressure was stacked high on the players that came in to replace the disqualified men.
RU bought into the "Next Man Up" philosophy, digging deep and clawing their way to the finish line. Trailing by three points with three minutes left in the game, Metoyer sliced his way through the defense and brought the visitors within one point 70-71. A basket from Little about one minute later put the team ahead 72-71, but the Mavericks responded by converting one of two free throw attempts on the other end.
With the clock ticking down, Regis had one last shot at winning the game. A deep three-point attempt from Metoyer bounced off the back of the rim, and senior
Elijah Sanders fought his way into position to come down with the rebound. He gathered himself, and with one second left on the clock, drained the put back layup winning the game, and extending the Rangers' win streak to six straight games.
Game Notes: Brodbeck (7-17 FG, 5-13 3-pt) scored a game-high 19 points, as three others scored in double figures. Metoyer (7-16 FG, two steals) dropped in 16 points while handing out a game-high five assists, senior
Noah King and junior
Dexter Sienko each had 10 points Sanders, the hero of the night, connected on 4-of-6 shots from the field including the game-winning shot with one second left.
RU finished the game with a 46.2 shooting percentage and outrebounding the home team 38-32 on the night. The free throw margin was dominated by CMU as they took 27 shots from the charity stripe as Regis only had eight.
Next Up for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will return home to host the Westminster College Griffins (5-5, 5-3 RMAC) on Saturday, January 14 at 7 p.m. in the Regis Fieldhouse. Comcast Entertainment Television (CET) will broadcast the game on their television channel, in addition to the Regis live stream provided by Stretch Internet.
