Durango, Colo. – Regis Volleyball advanced their record to 18-2 Friday night, cruising to a still-perfect 10-0 RMAC mark with a decisive three-set win over Fort Lewis College in Durango. The Rangers put on another show in efficiency against the Skyhawks, dominating with an offense which was both forceful and clean and a defense that stood up to nearly every FLC attempt at an attack. The straight-set win marked the sixth for RU in league play this year – the Rangers have dropped just five sets against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents.
Â
The loss dropped Fort Lewis to 8-10 overall (3-7 RMAC).
Â
How It Happened:Â Fort Lewis managed a first-set surge in the Saturday evening contest, but the Skyhawks could not manage a home upset against the nation's 12
th-ranked Rangers. Regis held off all FLC attempts, stifling them with scoring runs which kept the RU squad in control.
Â
In the night's opening set, the Rangers remained patient despite game-long battles for the advantage. The set score sat knotted at 25, then 26 and then 27 before Regis turned up the heat – unleashing for a pair of
Caitlyn Burroway and
Kelsey Green kills to go up 28-27 and then playing a patient final rally that ended with a Skyhawk attack error.
Â
The 29-27 set-one loss proved a tough set-back for the home Fort Lewis squad. Though they'd pushed the Rangers the entirety of the game, the battle was the Rangers' to win in the night's second set. An early 7-2 advantage added to the RU momentum and set the tone for a game that would end with a 25-18 Regis win. Though the Skyhawks pulled to within one a couple times, the home team never led in the game.
Â
Eager to wrap the match, the Rangers turned up the heat in the final set with a lethal attack Fort Lewis struggled to stop. Up 8-2, Regis extended their lead to 10-3, then 18-8 and later 21-11. It was easy sailing from there, with RU cruising to the 25-16 win. Indeed, Regis' offense was ablaze in the finale, as the Rangers dominated with a .457 kill clip. Their 18-kill, 2-error effort overpowered the 9-kill, 5-error showing from the Skyhawks.
Â
Match Notes: For the second-straight night,
Caitlyn Burroway led all hitters. The freshman outside totaled 14 kills in the win, hitting a .250 from the pin and impressing from the back row with a match-best 17 digs.
Kristen Hornung continued her offensive efficiency, putting down nine kills with just two errors in a .318 effort.
Nikki Kennedy flashed defensive dominance at the net, totaling four blocks in Regis' ten-block night. The Rangers wrapped the evening with 51 kills – the most for RU in three sets this year.
Â
Next Up For The Rangers:Â Regis returns to Denver this week, scheduled for a mid-week showing against rival Metro State on Tuesday before a pair of home matches against CSU Pueblo and NM Highlands on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday's match is slated for 7 pm.
