Denver, Colo. – Ranger Volleyball owned the night Friday, easily cruising past Colorado Christian in the RMAC Tournament's semifinal matchup. The top-seeded Rangers had no trouble with the no. 4 Cougars, winning in a quick three sets to advance to 27-3 on the year and punch their ticket to Saturday night's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship match.
How It Happened: Though the Cougars got the first point in the night's opening set, the CCU squad wouldn't lead again in the frame. Regis answered in a big way, using a trio of stuff blocks to set the tone for the match and go up big early on. Midway through the set – with
Kristina Schell at the service line – the Rangers mounted a run that would put the home team up big. When libero
Kristina Schell stepped back to the service line midway through the set, Regis held a 15-11 lead. Three Schell aces and two Christian timeouts later, the Rangers had their sights set on the finish and a 21-11 lead. A raucous home Regis crowd roared when RU wrapped the set at 25-14.
Â
It was a similar story in the second, as RU built on a four-block effort in the opener. Regis' defense at the net rattled the Cougars early, and by the time the visitors called their first timeout at 12-7 the Rangers had an impressive five blocks. Colorado Christian played out of system for most of the set, scrambling to answer Regis' potent assault. RU got the 25-20 win, thanks in part to a monster seven-kill showing from
Kelsey Green.
Â
By the time the third set started, all in the Fieldhouse could already sense the way it would go. Regis kept their foot on the gas, asserting themselves offensively en route to a 14-kill effort that included just three errors at the net.
Drew Rhamy anchored the back row, notching seven digs in the frame to help RU to a 25-18 win. Â
Â
Match Notes: In their best three-set defensive showing of the season, the Rangers tallied 14 team blocks.
Nikki Kennedy set the pace for the RU squad, turning back Christian hitters with an impressive ten-block showing – her best of the year in a three-game match. Green led all hitters with 12 kills, while RMAC Freshman of the Year
Caitlyn Burroway totaled just one error on eight kills for a team-best .368 kill clip. Schell finished the night with four aces and 13 digs.
Â
Next Up For The Rangers: The third-seeded Metro State Roadrunners won the night's other semi-final contest, securing a match-up against the Rangers in Saturday's tournament finale. Regis and Metro split two meetings this season, with each team winning at home in regular season play. The squads will square off a final time – this time for a crown – at 5 pm at the Regis Fieldhouse.
