Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

RU wins fourth-straight to start 2017-18 season

DENVER, Colo. – The win streak is up to four games for the Regis University men's basketball team (4-0) as they took down the University of North Georgia Nighthawks (2-3) 84-74 the day after Thanksgiving.

How it Happened: Regis looked to be firing on all cylinders in the first half as they jumped out to a 53-38 lead after 20 minutes of play. Senior Ty McGee scored 16 points in the opening period sinking 6-of-8 shots from the field in the half. He went a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line and dished out three assists in 17 minutes.

Sophomore Christian Little and junior Avonte Nelms (7 PTS, 2-6 FG, 1-4 3-pt, 5 AST) each recorded four assists in the first half, but they needed everything they had to fend off the Nighthawks in the second half.

Trailing by as many as 17 in the opening second of the second half, UNG came storming back to bring the game within three points, 71-68, at the 5:43 mark. Senior Dexter Sienko (14 PTS, 7-14 FG) teamed up with Little for a layup to go ahead by five a couple seconds later, and then Little added to the lead with a layup of his own with 3:48 on the clock to take a 75-68 lead.

Down the stretch, RU never found themselves ahead by less than five points and with less than a minute to go the lead stretched back out to 12 points following two made free-throws from both junior Jarrett Brodbeck (11 PTS, 4-12 FG, 1-7 3-pt) and freshman Tomas Auruskevicius (7 PTS, 2-5 FG, 1-1 3-pt). The Nighthawks got the final basket of the game but it came in a losing effort with Regis prevailing 84-74 on the night.

Game Notes: It was the work on the defensive end that sparked many of the Rangers' runs.  McGee had two blocks in the game with Sienko and senior Roberto Reyes adding one apiece for the team's four total blocks.

One oddity is that Regis held their opponents to 74 points for the third-straight game. McGee led the way with 22 points finishing 8-of-13 from the field with a fury of dunks throughout the game. Little had a great game on the boards tracking down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points and five assists on the night. Six Rangers made shots from beyond the arc including junior Ryan Beisty (6 PTS, 2-3 FG, 4 REB) who splashed two of his three attempts.

Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will return to the court tomorrow night to face the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders at 5 p.m.
