DENVER, Colo. – The No. 1 seeded Regis University women's soccer team (14-3-2) was upset by the No. 4 seeded Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves (10-7-1) by a score of 1-0 in the semi-final round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament.
How It Happened: The game was controlled primarily by Regis throughout the match, but it was CSU Pueblo that found a way to breakthrough when it really mattered. After the first 45 minutes, the score remained with zeroes on the board. At that point the Rangers had accounted for 11 of the 14 shots between the two teams despite neither team earning a single corner kick. The visitors made two saves and RU came up with a save on the lone shot on goal.
It was the second half of the match where things started to heat up. Both teams had the understanding that the first team to score would likely be the victor. Regis went on the offensive as they earned the first corner kick of the game for either team. Sophomore
Tori Rinsem managed to take a shot but it was saved by the ThunderWolves. The next time down the field senior
Akina Fujimoto had a header chance sail to the left of the goal, leaving the game scoreless through 57 minutes.
The Rangers seemed to be gaining a lot of momentum as they took shot after shot, narrowly missing the frame of the goal, or having their opportunities blocked or saved by the defense and goalkeeper. Following a CSU Pueblo save, the ThunderWolves started moving up the field, the ball reached the foot of RMAC Player of the Year, Mackenzie Bean, who laced a shot that went over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Julia Coombs and into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just before the 76
th minute.
Rinsem took a shot in the 80
th minute that was saved, and with less than five minutes to go in the game senior
Maggie Saras connected on a shot from nearly 30 yards out that just missed the top left corner of the goal. The clock continued to count down and when the horn sounded the ThunderWolves claimed the 1-0 victory.
Match Notes: RU had an even distribution of shots taking 22 total, 11 in each half, and recording eight shots on goal. CSU Pueblo managed only five shots, scoring one of their two shots that were on goal in the match, while also earning the advantage in corner kicks 3-2. Senior Cate Parchinski took a game-high seven shots, placing two of them on goal. Senior
Rikki Fix followed with four shots, putting a game-high three shots on goal as Rinsem finished with two. The Regis defense allowed only their ninth goal of the season, it just so happened to come in a match where the offense could not find a goal of their own.
Up Next for the Rangers: The women's soccer team finished the regular season as the champions of the RMAC. They made an early exit in the conference tournament after earning the top seed, but there is still a chance that the team could make it into the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The team will wait to see how things finally play and if they find themselves within the top six of the South Central Regional Rankings next week.
