PORTALES, N.M. – The Regis University men's basketball team picked up their tenth win of the season with a 68-61 win over the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds on Tuesday afternoon. Regis improves to 10-2 on the season while ENMU drops to 4-8.
How It Happened: As each team looked to find their rhythm in the early going neither team could pull away with a significant lead. Sophomore
Christian Little (17 PTS, 6-11 FG, 5-8 FT, 7 REB, 4 AST) found a way to provide a little separation as he scored back-to-back buckets to give the Rangers a 32-24 lead with 3:22 left in the opening half. The Greyhounds fought their way back, cutting the deficit to three points, 35-32, at halftime.
Out of the break, ENMU scored on consecutive possessions to take a one-point lead. RU fired back with a layup from Little followed by a three-point jumper from junior
Ryan Beisty (3 PTS, 1-3 FG, 1-2 3-pt, 9 REB). The game remained very tight as the teams constantly traded shot for shot. Regis battled and always had an answer for the Greyhound short runs.
At the 8:37 mark, ENMU trailed 50-49 following a huge shot from beyond the arc. On the next Rangers' possession, junior
Jarrett Brodbeck (14 PTS, 4-14 FG, 2-4 FT) was fouled on a three-point attempt which sent him to the charity stripe for three free-throws. He connected on the first two, but the third shot rattled off the rim where senior
Dexter Sienko (14 PTS, 7-13 FG, 6 REB) gobbled up the rebound. Brodbeck launched a trifecta and drilled it to put RU in front by six points, 55-49. The entire sequence gave the visitors a small cushion to build on while also silencing the momentum from ENMU.
Another 10-3 run from Regis allowed them to stretch out a 65-52 lead with less than four minutes to go in the game. The Greyhounds tried to scratch their way back into the game but the Rangers were too much for them. RU dribbled it out for the remaining eight seconds for their tenth win of the season.
Game Notes: For the third time in four games Little led the team in scoring with 17 points. Brodbeck and Sienko each added 14 points and senior
Ty McGee (2-7 FG, 5-7 FT) chipped in with nine. Little dished out a game-high four assists while Beisty grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. It was a poor shooting night for both sides but Regis edged ENMU with 39.3 percent (22-56 FG) to 38.3 percent (23-60 FG) shooting from the floor. The Rangers outrebounded the home squad 42-40 but they were on the wrong end of points in the paint (36-28), bench scoring (32-19) and fast break points (18-4). In the end, RU was the more disciplined team which led to the seven-point victory on the road.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will have a lengthy break before they return to action on December 30 when they travel to Durango, Colo. to battle the top team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks.
