Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense helps Rangers to 67-51 victory over MSU

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (3-5, 2-1 RMAC) held Metropolitan State University of Denver (5-4, 1-2 RMAC) to a field goal percentage of just 29.2 as they gathered their first conference road win of the season 67-51.

How it Happened: Both teams started the contest with two missed three-pointers before MSU was able to convert on their third attempt from downtown to take a 3-0 lead. Regis went down 7-2 but showed versatility in their offense to stay within striking distance throughout the first quarter. The Rangers scored five buckets and were able to get six players in the points column before heading into the break down 14-12.

RU allowed only 12 points on defense in the second and third quarter, allowing them to gain the lead and pull away. Regis made seven defensive stops in the first four minutes of the quarter while going on a 7-0 run fueled by two free-throws by junior Majestie Robinson. The Rangers held only a two-point edge with one minute remaining in the half, but went 5-for-5 from the foul line to stretch their lead to five (31-26) at the break.

MSU made a quick layup to start the second half only to follow it up with four straight minutes without a basket. In that time, RU jumped out to a 43-30 advantage.

The home team never got back within eight. Regis ended the game the same way they started, spreading the ball around to find different scorers. Six Rangers landed fourth quarter buckets and junior Morgan Ducklow scored the last four points to secure a 67-51 victory.

Game Notes: Senior Mary Sigler grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds while junior Shelby Espinosa added seven. Sigler also scored 14 points, five fewer than Robinson, the game-leader with 19.

RU shot 36.8 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range. Their offense only had seven assists on the night but the defense helped out with two blocks and four steals.

MSU out-rebounded the Regis 45-39.

Up Next for the Rangers: The women's basketball team will stay on the road for their next game on December 9 as they take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on 5:30 p.m.
