Rebounding lifts women's basketball over South Dakota Mines

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team used their always consistent rebounding to lift them to a 75-69 win over the visiting South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Lady Hardrockers (11-15, 9-12 RMAC). Much was on the line for both squads, the Rangers battling for home-court advantage in the opening round of the upcoming conference tournament and South Dakota Mines vying for the last spot in.

Karlyn Johnson led the Rangers in scoring with 15 shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Johnson added six rebounds, four of which were offensive. Kaylie Rader and Majestie Robinson both went down on the stat sheet for 14 and 12 points, respectively. Rader and Robinson combined for 13 rebounds.

How It Happened: From the start, it was clear both teams were determined to play a fast-paced game as the first quarter played through without its usual timeout. The Rangers held a slight 17-16 lead thanks to a Robinson three-pointer at the end of the first quarter of play.

Mary Sigler gave RU the largest lead of the game by either team at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter, 28-22. The Lady Hardrockers responded with a quick 6-3 run to keep the score tight.

With the clock winding down, Sigler grabbed the defensive rebound and took off down the court. She hit Jaz'Myne Snipes in stride for a layup to close out the quarter and give the Rangers a 34-32 lead at halftime.

At the start of the second half, it was obvious this RMAC battle was going to go until the final buzzer. The Lady Hardrockers tied things up on a three-point basket with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter, 43-43. The lead would exchange hands twice more before the end of the quarter.

A 9-3 run by the Rangers to open the fourth quarter resulted in a momentum shift favorable to the home team but South Dakota Mines matched it with a five-point swing to come within two, 56-54. Over the course of the remainder of the game both teams would go basket-for-basket until a quick 6-1 RU run put some distance in their lead, 70-64.

Johnson knocked down four free throw's in the final minute of play to keep the Rangers in control. Regis improves to a 20-6 overall mark and 15-6 in the RMAC. The last time the women's basketball program earned 20 wins was in the 2006-07 season.

Game Notes: En route to dominating South Dakota Mines in the rebounding column 42-27, the Rangers hit the offensive glass hard recording 20, 13 of which came in the first half. Shelby Espinosa led Regis in rebounds pulling down nine. Regis shot 43.1 (31-72) percent from the field, 15.8 (3-19) from three and 76.9 (10-13) from the line. RU forced 12 turnovers while only committing six of their own. The Rangers dished out 13 assists led by Sigler with four. 52 Regis points came from inside the paint.

Next Up For The Rangers: RU hosts Black Hills State in the final regular season game of the season Saturday, February 25 at 3:30 p.m.
