Women's basketball drops overtime thriller to Mines

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The No. 22/25 Regis University women's basketball team hosted the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (14-11, 10-6 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rematch. The Orediggers hit a three in the final seconds of regulation to send it to overtime and the Rangers fell short with a look at a last second shot succumbing to an 82-79 defeat.

Majestie Robinson led the Rangers with 26 points going 8-of-18 from the field, 4-of-10 from three and 6-of-7 from the line. Robinson also added five rebounds, two steals and four assists. Chante Church and Mary Sigler rounded out the Rangers netting double-digit scoring numbers with 15 and 12.

How It Happened: The physical nature of this RMAC battle was obvious from the start. A pair of three's from Sigler and Robinson late in the first quarter allowed the Rangers to hold a slight 19-15 lead.

At the media timeout of the second quarter, the Rangers held the largest lead of the game thus far by either team at 27-21. However, the Orediggers quickly recovered taking their first lead of the game since early in the first at 34-33, a score that would remain the same at halftime. Both teams shot well throughout the first half with RU shooting exceptionally well from distance at 45.5 percent (5-11).

The RMAC clash carried on from distance as both teams exchanged baskets from beyond the arc. The Orediggers went through a two and a half minute stretch in which Emily Bailey hit four three-pointers. Colorado Mines held onto a small lead at 56-52 after three quarters of play.

The Rangers opened the fourth quarter with a quick 6-0 run on a three-point play from Robinson and a Church three-point basket. That run swung the lead back in RU's favor to 58-56. Robinson hit her stride knocking down another from distance taking advantage of a Mines defender that went under a screen.

With just under two minutes to play, the lead continued to exchange hands elevating this cross-town rivalry down to the final seconds. A pair of missed Oredigger free throw's with just under a minute to play allowed Regis to control a 69-68 lead.

An offensive foul call on RU with thirty seconds remaining gave possession of the ball back to the visitors. Robinson secured the defensive rebound on a missed Mines jumper to then head to the line and knock down a pair of free throw's. With time running down, in a last ditch effort, the Orediggers hit their 12th three of the game to tie the score at 71-71 and send it to overtime.

It was clear that neither team would back down from this overtime challenge. McKenna Bishop gave Regis a 79-78 lead hitting two free throw's with just over a minute to play. Colorado Mines quickly regained an 80-79 lead with three seconds remaining forcing the Rangers to foul.

RU got the ball back after a pair of Mines free throw's gave them a three-point lead, 82-79, with two seconds left. The Rangers executed a last-second play that saw Bishop launch one from distance but hit the front of the rim.

Game Notes: The Rangers narrowly outrebounded the Orediggers 48-45. Shelby Espinosa contributed matching her career-high 13 boards. Karlyn Johnson chipped in with ten rebounds and a block. RU shot 36.2 percent (25-69) from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from distance and 76 percent (19-25) from the charity stripe. Colorado Mines turned the ball over just 11 times. The lead changed ten times and Regis tied the score up four times, three of which came in the overtime period.
