PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University softball team grabbed a pair of wins in the first day of action over the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves (11-15, 8-10 RMAC). The Rangers held the home team scoreless throughout the first game to take a 4-0 victory to then cruise to a 13-4 six-inning game two win.
Lauren Hernandez and
Alyssa Finger led RU offensively throughout both games each going 4-for-7. They combined for four runs and three RBIs. Heronema added a 3-for-6 performance with three RBIs and two runs of her own.
How It Happened | Game 1: The Rangers took an early 2-0 lead after bringing two across in the top of the second.
Logan Losh earned a lead-off walk and moved around to third on a double down the left field line from Hernandez. Heronema recorded her 13
th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Losh. A single down the right field line from Finger brought Hernandez across the plate.
Regis was solid on the defensive side of the ball holding the ThunderWolves scoreless throughout all seven innings. RU put a little more cushion to their lead adding two more to the board in the top of the seventh as
Bradey King notched her first triple of the year on two outs to score Finger and
Emily John. That two-RBI triple from King pushed the Ranger lead to 4-0.
Game Notes: Losh was stellar on the mound for RU as she earned her fifth shutout thus far moving to an overall record of 14-5. Losh struck out seven batters in 26 faced while allowing just three hits. Finger led on the offensive side going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run, an RBI and two stolen bases. The Rangers outhit the ThunderWolves 7-3 while forcing the home team to leave five runners stranded.
How It Happened | Game 2: The Rangers exploded offensively early in top half of the second to take another early lead. On one out, Finger loaded the bases with a single to short. Heronema drove the first run home notching her second RBI on the day. Finger made it 2-0 coming across with help from an error by the catcher.
John recorded two RBIs with a single to center field that scored Heronema and
Leah Gordon. King, with her second big hit on the day, hit a double to left center to give RU a 5-0 lead.
CSU-Pueblo scored the first runs of the entire day in the home half of the second. RU still remained in control after three runs gave way to a 5-3 lead. The Rangers matched their five-spot from the second in the top of the fourth.
A series of singles from Losh, Hernandez and
Carlie Sexton pushed Regis' lead to 10-3. Although the ThunderWolves scored one more in the bottom half of the fourth, RU continued with the offensive domination provided by the same consistent players throughout the day. Another series of singles from Finger, Hernandez and Heronema gave Regis a 13-4 lead to enforce the run-rule.
RU held CSU-Pueblo scoreless in the bottom of the sixth to walk away from day one of action with a pair of wins.
Game Notes: The Rangers went just two innings without scoring. Hernandez and Heronema both went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Regis. Those two combined for three runs and three RBIs. Finger added a 2-for-4 performance with one run and an RBI. Seven Rangers went down in the books for RBIs; John, Losh and Heronema led with two RBIs a piece. RU outhit CSU-Pueblo 14-8.
Taylor Armitage pitched in all six innings and recorded three strikeouts to improve to an overall mark of 4-10.
