Game Recap: Softball |

Slow offense dooms RU in day two

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team challenged the conference-leading No. 11 Colorado Mesa Mavericks (34-5, 27-3 RMAC) more than any other recent opponent but came up short closing out the series with 1-0 and 5-2 losses.

How It Happened | Game 1: The Rangers pitching and defense retired the Mavericks in order in the first and second innings.  Regis saw their largest scoring opportunity with bases loaded in the bottom of the second but could not convert.

Colorado Mesa took a slight 1-0 lead in the top of the third as RU would leave two runners stranded again in the bottom of the third. The Rangers offense slowed down throughout the remainder of the game as they were unable to come up with the tying run.

Game Notes: A defensive battle saw RU outhit CMU 5-4 as both teams left seven runners on base. Carlie Sexton, Logan Losh, Melissa Heronema and Laura Scheffel all went 1-for-3 at the plate. Losh pitched in all seven innings for the Rangers striking out seven batters in 29 faced. Losh suffers the loss moving her to an overall record of 19-8. The lone run for Colorado Mesa came across the plate due to a protested drop third strike call that was upheld after review.

How It Happened | Game 2: The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a hit by pitch that advanced the runners on bases loaded and a one-out single up the middle. Colorado Mesa added another to the board in the top of third to lead 3-0 on a single down the left field line.

The Rangers notched their first two runs of the day in the bottom of the third. Ca. Sexton recorded two RBIs driving Scheffel and Emily John across the plate on a single up the middle. A two-out, one-run home run by Colorado Mesa in the top of the fifth gave the visitors a 4-2 lead.

Batters retired in order for both teams in the sixth inning as Regis forced the Mavericks to leave two runners on base but not without sneaking one more across. The Rangers could not get any sort of offense moving in the bottom of the seventh to drop the series 3-1.

Game Notes: John led at the plate for RU going 2-for-3 with one run. Bradey King went 1-for-2 while Ca. Sexton, Delaney McGinn and Alyssa Finger each went 1-for-3 as Ca. Sexton tallied the only two RBIs. The Mavericks outhit the Rangers 9-6 and RU forced the visitors to leave seven runners on base. All four pitchers saw some time on the mound for Regis as Losh suffered the loss.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis heads out on their final road trip to Black Hills State on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. First pitch it set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
